Brewer and Mesa, AZ - Guy Leon Baker, 79, of Brewer, Maine, and Mesa, Arizona, passed away on March 25, 2024, in Mesa. Born on July 13, 1944, in Haleyville, Alabama, to Glynell Johnson Baker and Elmer Baker, Guy grew up in Brewer, Maine. Guy graduated from Brewer High School in 1962 and went on to attend the University of Maine and graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1966. Guy worked for the Maine Department of Transportation for many years as a civil engineer, and later as the Division Engineer.
He was predeceased by his parents, Glynell and Elmer Baker; and sister, Neva Baker. Guy is survived by his sister, Roberta Hesseltine of Corinth; his children, Tanya Baker and her husband, Dave Beck, of El Cerrito, CA, Albert Baker and his partner, Erika Baker, of Hermon, and Heather Balzer and her husband, Adam Balzer, of Tempe, AZ; as well as ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Like the state of Maine, in which he lived most of his life, Guy Baker was craggy, salty, independent, and ruggedly personable. He had high standards for those near to him, whom he rewarded with fierce loyalty. We will miss him just as fiercely.
A memorial service will be planned for July in Bangor, ME, to honor and celebrate Guy's life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the University of Maine Foundation.
