Brewer - Born January 14, 1926, William Power Hayes passed away peacefully July 22, 2017. A lifelong resident of The City of Brewer, which he loved and served throughout his life. He is survived by his high school sweetheart Ellen and wife of 70 years, their daughter Margaret Legasse and son -in- law Mike, grandsons, Derek and wife Robin, Jeremy and wife Angela; great -grandchildren, Abbey, Christopher, Sydney, Brynn and Ellie; his brother, George and wife Dorothy and children, Linda and Catherine, sister- in- law, Jean Lyford and children, Susan and Peter and cousin Harriet Simon. He was predeceased by his brother-in- law, Lawrence "Bud" Lyford and his Nephew Mark S. Hayes. Bill attended Brewer Schools and Brewer High School graduating class of 1943, attended the University of Maine graduating Class of 1947 as a Civil Engineer. Bill and Ellen married in August of 1947. His early work years involved Engineering and construction supervision of Dryden Terrace Apartments in Orono, several buildings at the University of Maine, The pump house station for the Brewer Water District and Bangor Gardens to name a few. In 1955, he joined his brother in law and partner Bud Lyford and together they operated Thompson and Lyford Hardware of Brewer until his retirement in 1990. After which he and his family owned and operated The Center Mall Antiques growing it from 12 dealer spaces to 92 and later selling the real estate and business. In later years Bill and Ellen attended the First United Methodist Church of Brewer serving on several committees. He championed the gathering of his high school classmates for lunch each month. Throughout his adult life he gave selflessly to his community, serving the Brewer Water District as trustee and chairman for more than 40 years. The First Congregational Church of Brewer as Trustee, deacon and other countless subcommittees for 47 years. He also served as a director of the Brewer Economic Development Corporation for over 40 years and various city committees. William most recently served as treasurer and shepherded the most recent expansion of an additional building while working with municipal government for the Brewer Historical Society.
