Donald F. Goodness - Class Of 1944

HOLDEN – Donald Frederick Goodness Sr., 78, died unexpectedly, Dec. 6, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 30, 1926, in Brewer, the son of Leo J. and Grace G. (Sutton) Goodness. He was a 1944 graduate of Brewer High School and served in the U.S. Army’s 126th Infantry Division in the South Pacific during World War II. He worked at Eastern Fine Paper Co., in Brewer; was a Brewer Firefighter, and retired in 1986 as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Bangor. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Eddington Salmon Club, Penobscot Salmon Club and Penobscot County Conservation Club, as well as the Brewer VFW Post 4917. He was an avid amateur radio operator. The call letters KA1VEX may now be retired. He was the devoted and loving husband to Virginia (Lee) Goodness, his wife of 58 years, who has resided since February at Eastside Rehab & Living Center in Bangor, where he made daily visits. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children, Pamela Clark and her husband, Clyde, of Norway, Maine, Donald Jr. and his wife, Jane, of Holden, Suzanne St. Heart and her husband, Ed, of Holden, James and his wife, Jane Philbrick, of Stillwater; two brothers, Richard and his wife, Thelma, and John “Jack” and his wife, Mildred, all of Brewer; three brothers-in-law, Harold Lee of Auckland, New Zealand, Perley Lee of Milton, N.H.; and Richard Lee of Bangor; 10 grandchildren, Charles Clark and his wife, Heather, of Lewiston, Leigh Ann Elliott and her husband, Rick, of Brewer, Michelle Valcourt and her husband, Scott, of Rochester, N.H., Lisa Johns and her husband, Evan, of Pensacola, Fla., Erik Goodness, Brian Goodness of Holden, Matthew Clark of Norway, Emily Goodness of Holden, Steven Clark of Norway and Kate Goodness of Stillwater; four great-grandchildren, Anthony Moore of Brewer, Gregory and Elizabeth Valcourt of Rochester, N.H., Charles Bradrick of Lewiston; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Leo, Peter and Paul Goodness. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Dr. Frederick Heineman as well as the trauma room and fifth floor staffs at EMMC for their care and compassion. Friends may visit 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and 12 noon-2 p.m. Thursday at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Robert Vaillancourt, pastor of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Hampden, officiating. Burial at Clewleyville Cemetery  in Holden.
