Gladys Edith Titcomb (MacLeod) - Class Of 1930

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Mrs. Gladys Edith Titcomb MacLeod, 94, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008. Born Aug. 24, 1913, in Island Falls, Gladys enjoyed a long and interesting life. Gladys was the daughter of Vernon Emery Titcomb Sr. and Helen Maria Lord Titcomb. A school teacher at the age of 16, she later went on to get her registered nurse degree and worked in several hospitals around the country, as well as for the Red Cross. In middle age, when most people are thinking of slowing down, Gladys chose to go back to school and received her Bachelor of Science degree in the early 1960s. During World War II, while Gladys served in the Army Nurse Corps, stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, a very handsome young private, Jack MacLeod, was admitted to her ward. Her new patient was so taken by his nurse that he faked illness for several days. Clearly, Gladys was as just as interested, since after a whirlwind two-week courtship, the couple were married April 10, 1942. Their marriage lasted 66 years, until Gladys' death. After her husband's retirement from the military, Gladys and Jack successfully worked together in their own business for many years. An excellent nurse, loving wife, caring mother and good businesswoman, Gladys was also an excellent horsewoman, who owned horses and rode whenever she could. In between time spent on her other interests, Gladys traveled to as many places as possible, including Mexico, Canada, Europe, the Orient and much of the U.S. Gladys had a strong love of Christ and was always active in one of the local churches in whatever town she was living in. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Riverhead, N.Y., and Liberty Hill Methodist Church, Liberty Hill, Texas, the place of her husband's birth. She was also active in the Christian Woman's Club; Mayflower Society, the Priscilla Mullins Alden Colony; and the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Francis Dighton Williams Chapter. She was prdeceased by her parents; by two of her sisters, Inez, who died in child-hood and Serena Titcomb Smi-ley; and by one of her brothers, Vernon E. Titcomb Jr. She is survived by her husband, Andrew Jackson "Jack" MacLeod of Cedar City, Utah; her daughter, Sara Wolff and husband, Lonnie, of Cedar City, Utah; her son, Myron MacLeod and wife, Kathy, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; by her grandsons, Justin Couch and wife, Erin, of Portland, Ore., Jamie Couch of Riverhead, N.Y., Eric Ecuyer of Carlsbad, Calif., Rob Ecuyer of Atlanta and Andrew MacLeod of Los Angeles. Gladys is also survived by her sister, Ruth Currier of Brewer; and her brother, Ellwood Titcomb of DeLand, Fla. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Liberty Hill Methodist Church, Liberty Hill, Texas. Interment will be after at Augusta Cemetery. Family will receive friends Monday morning beginning 9:30 a.m. at Liberty Hill Methodist Church, Liberty Hill, Texas. Callaway-Allee Funeral Home, 700 East Houston Ave., Crockett, Texas.
