Elizabeth Dutch - Class Of 1930

BREWER - Elizabeth L. Dutch, 96, passed away Dec. 2, 2009, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born Sept. 18, 1913, in Brewer, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Duplissie) Dutch. She graduated from Brewer High School and Maine State Normal School at Farmington in 1932, and was a much loved and respected teacher in Brewer for more than 30 years, most of those years at Dirigo Elementary School. Hundreds of children, now adults, fondly remember "Miss Dutch" as a dedicated teacher. Countless Brewer residents still recall seeing Elizabeth and her sister, Doris, walking everywhere. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Brewer, and was a recent resident of The Ellen Leach Home, Brewer, where she will be missed by her neighbors and friends. Elizabeth was predeceased by her best friend and sister, Doris A. (Dutch) Gass; and brothers, George, Robert, Reggie and Carroll Dutch. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, Georgia Rae, Leanne, Steve, Allan, Lorraine, Muriel and Louise Dutch. She is also survived by a great-niece, Megan (Gass) Wendell of Philadelphia; a great-nephew, Ryan Gass of Denver; one great-great-niece, Lyra Wendell; and three fortunate nephews to whom "Aunt Lib" was more like a second mom, John, Tom and Larry Gass. Thanks to Aunt Lib, the family still has a camp at Holbrook Pond, where Lib shared many summers with us. In respect of Elizabeth's wishes, burial will be private for the family. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at Brookings-Smith Family Rooms, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Those who wish to remember Elizabeth in a special way may make gifts in her memory to First United Methodist Church, 40 South Main St., Brewer, ME 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
