Barbara Drew - Class Of 1938

Barbara  DrewBREWER - BREWER - Barbara J. Drew, 90, passed away peacefully Oct. 4, 2011, at a Bangor health care facility after a long illness with her sister by her side. She was born April 5, 1921, in Brewer, daughter of J. Louis and Jean (Crimmin) Drew. Barbara graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1938, and then completed a three-year teaching program at Husson College. Her first teaching assignment was in Carmel. Barbara then went to American International College, Springfield, Mass., where she worked as the student activities director, as well as earned her bachelor's degree and her master's degree. To complete her higher education she received her Certificate Advanced Study from Auburn University. Barbara lived in Columbus, Ga., where she taught and was the principle of Blanchard Elementary School for more than 40 years. She also held the position as president for Georgia Elementary School Principle's Association. In 1984, she retired back to her roots in Brewer. She remained active in various activities with the Girl Scouts, was the director of Natarswi Girl Scout Camp, and received the Lowe Award, which is a national recognition. Barbara also received one of the highest honors from the Boy Scouts, the Silver Beaver Award, for her dedication to their programs. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Maine Chapter of the Mayflower Society and was a longtime member of United Methodist Church, Brewer, where she served on various committees. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Polly Drew. She is survived by her dear sister, Connie Darrah of Bangor; two nephews, J. Stephen Darrah and wife, Cathy, of Carrollton, Texas, and Alan Darrah and wife, Vicki, of Hermon; one great-niece, three great-nephews, one great-great-niece, and, of course, her two cats. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at First United Methodist Church, Brewer, with the Rev. Dr. Tracy Reeves officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the downstairs reception room immediately after the service. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer.
