KITTERY - Virginia Lucille Barstow Derby passed away Sept. 12, 2008, at Durgin Pines, Kittery. Virginia was born July 6, 1918, in Brewer, the third of six children, to Roy and Lulu (Maddox) Barstow. She was educated in Brewer schools, graduating from Brewer High School in 1936, salutatorian of her class. Virginia continued her education at the University of Maine, graduating with honors in 1940. She returned to the University of Maine later in her life to earn a master's degree in library science in 1975. She began teaching in 1940 at Carmel High School, followed by positions at Jonesport and Old Town high schools. In 1941 while teaching at Jonesport, she met the love of her life, LaRoy Derby, who was also teaching at the high school. Like so many others of their generation, their courtship was interrupted by World War II, with LaRoy joining the Navy in 1942. Before the war ended, Virginia and LaRoy were married in January 1944 in Brewer. After the war Virginia and LaRoy settled in Millinocket and started a family. Their son, Peter, was born in 1947 and son, James in 1953. Virginia stayed at home raising their children until she returned to work in 1959 as librarian at Stearns High School, Millinocket. She was an active member of Millinocket Congregational Church, Millinocket Junior Literary Club and a Cub Scout leader. In 1969 the family moved to Greenville, where LaRoy took the position of principal at Greenville Consolidated School. Virginia finished her career with positions as librarian at Beal and Husson colleges, Bangor and retired in 1978 while living in Hampden. After retirement LaRoy and Virginia built a new home in Stetson and moved into it in 1980. She and LaRoy did much of the work on the house themselves.
