BREWER - Fern D. Foster, 86, wife for 56 years to the late John C. Foster, passed away peacefully Aug. 24, 2010, at her daughter's home in Lisbon. She was born July 9, 1924, in Medford, Mass., the daughter of Andrew H. and Ethel (Fernald) Dwelly. Fern was a member of Brewer High School, Class of 1942. She was a life member of Brewer Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary for more than 60 years and served more than 25 years as chaplain and many years as treasurer. She was an active member of Holden Grange, active in past years in Brewer PTA, University of Maine Extension Service, Bible study, and Stonecroft Christian Women, and participated in many Mothers Marches for the March for Dimes. Fern attended First United Methodist Church, Brewer. Fern's career was as a wife and mother, and she also held several positions in the Bangor-Brewer community. She is survived by her four children, Fern Williams Libby, John C. Foster Jr., Ethel C. Dyer and her husband, John, and Berrita L. Foster; her grandsons, Bruce R. Williams and his wife, Vianka, Andrew B. Williams, David J. Dyer and his wife, Pamela, and Paul A. Dyer and his wife, Tammy; great-grandchildren, Brandon Williams, Gregory Williams, Caitlyn Dyer, Taylor Dyer, Alyssa Thibodeau and Mat Plumley, and Devin Thibodeau; one great-great-grandson, Shane Plumley; her nieces, Ethlyn Harris and Rosalie Caswell; and a nephew, Kenneth Young. She is also survived by her childhood friend, high school classmate and lifelong close friend, Julia (Collins) Gilmore. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Berrita Young; daughter-in-law, Shirl Foster; son-in-law, Richard Libby; and lifelong friend, Gloria (Paulette) Johnson. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, at First United Methodist Church, Brewer, with the Rev. Dr. George Curtis III officiating.
