Henry Knowles - Class Of 1943

BREWER - Henry O. Knowles, 84, died Nov. 8, 2009, at Maine Veterans' Home, Bangor. He was born June 15, 1925, in Bangor, the son of George and Amy Knowles. Henry graduated from Brewer High school. After his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II, where he was critically wounded in the Battle of Normandy. After a lengthy recovery in England, he returned to Brewer and took up a career in watch repair. In 1953, he married Cynthia Holyoke of Brewer. They raised a family of five children. Henry enjoyed hunting, fishing and his camp at Beech Hill Pond. In his retirement, he raised Christmas trees on the Brewer homestead. He will be remembered for his talent of intricate woodcarving and as a maker of clocks. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Priscilla French; and a brother, Frederick. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Cynthia; are his sons, Galen and his wife, Joy, of Holden, Vaughn and his wife, Laurie, of Beech Hill Pond, and Harley and his wife, Cynthia, of Freeport; a daughter, Holly Knowles of Bradley; seven grandchildren, Aaron, Aaric and Trevor Adams, Adam and his wife, Heather Knowles, Erin Knowles, and Colby and Kaylee Caruso; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Friends may call noon until time of service Friday, Nov. 13, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where a memorial service will begin 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Tracy Reeves, pastor of North Brewer Eddington United Methodist Church, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service Friday at Brookings-Smith Family Rooms, 55 South Main St., Brewer.
