Barbara Sedgley (Doane) - Class Of 1942

Barbara Doane ObituaryBREWER AND ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - Barbara J. Doane, 90, wife of the late Gordon F. Doane, died March 27, 2015, after a brief illness. She was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Caribou, ME, the daughter of the late John R. and Margaret A. (Meehan) Sedgley. She had one dearly missed sister, the late Marion A. Fazio of Wakefield, MA.

Barbara attended Brewer High School, class of 1942, answered the call of "Rosie the riveter" for the war effort of WWII, employed by the Charlestown Navy Yard as a sheet metal helper and Faraday Electrical Contractors as an assembler, both in Boston. She worked as a waitress, homemaker, talented seamstress and was an independent, determined, supporting and loving mother. Barbara was a secretary with the Bangor-Brewer Christian Women's Club of 1952, served as a Girl and Cub Scout leader, was a member and had served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent with the Second Congregational Church, Brewer, and was a member of the Brewer Senior Citizens.

She was thrilled to ride motorcycles and fly with her husband in single engine aircraft and later with a son. Activities enjoyed were her rock, flower and vegetable gardens, flowering shrubs, a bountiful raspberry patch, walking, swimming, volleyball, family lobster and clam picnics in the Bar Harbor coastal region, watching TV game shows, daily crossword puzzles, playing bridge, solitaire and showed her children no mercy with her cribbage skills.

She treasured the seasonal migration of a "snowbird" and was blessed by the hospitality and care of a daughter, including her in many activities in MA and was also blessed with the fondness of a loving daughter in ME, enjoying many day trips and excursions with her daughters. Special times were delightful when visiting a son at Moosehead Lake - boating and enjoying the scenery. She was always eager to go for a ride and had remarkable memories with relatives, extended family, former neighbors and friends scattered over northern New England.

Barbara was content and comfortable in St. Petersburg walking the" Pier" and along the downtown waterfront parks, Gulf beach sidewalks or perched upon John's Pass Bridge to watch colorful sunsets, relishing the coastal breezes and fresh air, chatting with neighborhood friends, observing frolics of shorebirds at home and was blessed to live her elder years as she had wished with a son's assistance.
