CHELMSFORD, MA — Verton William Lenfest, Jr., 83, of North Chelmsford, MA, and a former resident of Meriden, CT, returned to the arms of his beloved wife on August 13, 2012.
He was married to the absolute love of his life Elizabeth “Betsy” (McNamara) Lenfest for 54 years before she predecease him on April 25, 2009.
The son of the late Verton W. Lenfest, Sr. and Viola (Hodsdon) Lenfest, he was a graduate of Brewer (Maine) High School with the class of 1947 and was an active alumnus at Central Connecticut State University where he earned a B.A. in 1961.
Upon moving to Chelmsford in 1973, he founded, owned and operated The Lenfest Insurance Agency and Family Realty with his dear Betsy until his retirement.
He was a member of the Chelmsford Congregational Church of North Chelmsford. He was a past member of the Chelmsford Lion’s Club and an active member of the Republican Town Committee. He is undoubtedly continuing to convert all he meets by telling each one “Vote Republican”.
He was a voracious reader of history, a poet, entering several local Poetry Slams. One of his favorite non-award winning short poems was “The Procrastinating ParachutistTHUD!” He was also an avid writer, co-writing with his brother, Rod “The Royal Highway” a manual for financial and marital success. In addition, the Letters to the Editor section of the Lowell Sun will be markedly thinner with his passing.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Candice and Thomas Mack of Meriden, CT; brother, Rodney Lenfest of Vancouver, BC; sister, Althea Edwards of North Carolina; three grandchildren and their spouses, Ryan and Rebecca Mack, Kimberly and Scott Doerfler, Tomisyn and Chad Sylvester; six great-grandchildren, Thomas Doerfler, Carrigan Mack, Victoria Doerfler, Brayden Mack, Jacob Sylvester, Jack Sylvester; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Merle Lenfest of Texas who died in 2009.
His gifts of short stories, poems, letters and cards, eloquently penned with a calligrapher’s flair will be a true loss for so many friends, neighbors, and family members.
