Good quote from Murrow. I have tuned onto what I will call my new mentor, the late Rod Serling. I came across his daugter, Anne's Facebook page somehow. She is sharing photos and quotes from her dad and advertising her book, As I Knew Him: My Dad, Rod Serling. Not only was Rod a gifted writer, a true humanitarian but a great family man as well. I havn't read Anne's book, yet, but intend to.
Rod was a paratrooper in the second world war. He saw his share of what war is all about. I won't expound. Many of his Twighight Zone episodes deal with some of men's inequities, prejudices, fears and taboos. Rod was a very moral man and through his writing, tried to shed light on some of humankind's inherent weaknesses. He had a true gift in understanding and writing about human being's easy return to our reptilian brain. This thing we call civilization, you know, is a very thin verneer. Just look around.
My favorite episode of the Twightzone is titled: The Shelter. This episode shows just how fragile and in some cases phoney human friendships are. A few months back I watched his full length movie, Patterns. Great ending and shows that just about anyone can be bought. I had seen it before, but didn't realize that Rod had written the screen play.
Check out Anne's FaceBook page if you are curious about this extraordinary man. Encouage your children and grand children to seek out a mentor and remind them that their mentor doesn't have to be alive. Others have gone before us and can help show us the way. Be like Rod and draw a line in the sand concerning what is morally right and wrong. We now are living in a time where the average person is having trouble distinguishing right from wrong, truth from lies. Social media is in my opinion partly responsible for thisl
There are many quotes I could post here from Rod. I'll leave you with this one.......
