My mother was a diehard Elvis fan, but I was not. I think he reminded her of the 1920's into the 1940's. My mother was the daughter of a couple that was from Virginia. Elvis Presley was an icon in the generation music change era. He seemed to depict the style of the classic movie era singers and smooth singing "crooners" like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, etc.
R&B, Rock & Roll, folk-rock, and modern jazz music was changing the style of popular music in the movies, TV, and on the radio. The deep tones singing voice was being combined with falsetto singing voice parts.
I played trumpet and the french horn brass instruments in school bands before my high school days. I was never a singer, keybords player, or guitar player. French horn was my favorite brass instrument to play. I did not like to play in young amature orchestras that focused on violins and woodwind solos; most adolescent musicians in those instrument types were often out of key and struggling to have a smooth and pleasant output "delivery". Temperature and humidity seem to greatly effect the quality of playing string and reed instruments.
New groups and popular singers in the late 1950's into the 1980's used blends of group harmony singing, formal choir ensembles and symphonic orchestra musicians support, along with new keyboard synthasizers, evolving electric/acoustic guitar instrument combinations, brass and sax accompaniments, and highly mixed voice-over productions.
We liked the "Smooth Jazz" radio station when we lived in Puyallup (just before we retired.) We listen to a lot of modern Christian musc (like Hillsong United music) and 1980's era music now using Sirius Radio services in our car or the Internet at home.
We think the 1980's were the golden years for song production with a huge variety of groups, innovative musician accompaniments, lyrics, and singing voice types and styles.
I am not a "Acid Rock" '70's fan. i am an Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Moody Blues, Pink Ffloyd, Beachboys, Rolling Stones, Asia, Billy Squier, Doobie Brothers, and Chicago, Genesisi/Phil Collins/Mike & the Mechanics, Yes (band), 38 Special, Journey, Boston, and The Who fan. They are about as far away from the Elvis soft southern rock music style tat you can get. My favorites also date me...
