David Barnes (1976)

Charles was a great friend to me. After High school we went to what was then Southwest Technical Institute for electronics training. We were Lab partners, working on the same bench. He was one of the most happiest, upbeat, good natured people I've ever met. I took advantage of his good nature in that he always sat at the lab bench in such a way that his knee was in front of a particular drawer that was most often accessed. So me being me I would always open that drawer abrubtly and of course "innocently" and smash his knee. I feel appropriately guilty now.

I had the pleasure of going to Hooks, Tx with Charles and seeing his roots. He turned me on to Willie Nelson when I didn't like country. And I liked it. At that time Charles had an 'El Camino', you know the sort of "car pick-up". We would load up the bed with cases of Coors beer and throw a tarp over it and drive it to Camden. In Texas you could buy it at 18. Couldn't buy it in Arkansas at any age. We did our own little mini "Smokey and the Bandit" thing. We would drive up to my house and my Dad would come out. Charles would step out of the El Camino with his signature million dollar smile and say, "Hello Mister Barnes, would you like a couple of cases of Coors". My Dad really liked Charles a lot.

Thank You Bruce Belin and David Shirey for your comments. Charles was a great guy and he lives on in us. And by the way, I remember both of you guys too. You were both good friends to me. Better than I was to you. I miss Charles too. But he lives on in our thoughts. You guys can contact me anytime. Pacific time.

And Bruce my brother Richard still plays Bass in a band up near Little Rock in Cabot. I'm bettin' you still play guitar and you're better than ever. Hook up.

And David, you were always a good friend to me. I hope that good Dharma will bring you good Karma.
