School Story:

My favorite school story involves an interaction with me and Mr. Wilcox. One day I was putting up some pictures I had made from our old Chief 15 printing press that was used to turn out our newspaper 'The Cannon'. It was a mosaic composition of a series of pictures with a quote from Carl Sandburg, "These are heroes then, Heroes did you say, and why not?" They included Michael Baum and Alison Rose singing together, Lesile Scott at a cheer leader rally at the microphone, the trombone player from from US Steel, a photo of a Tomzack playing football, and the Iwo Jima Memorial. Coming towards me and ripping down pictiures of mushrooms and of a marijuana leaves was Mr. Wilcox. We crossed paths as I was putting my print up. He stopped and looked at me and at the print and said,"Who put this here?" I timidly replied, "I did sir." He looked at the print and looked at me and after what seemed a long, long time, he said," Mathews, I like this. You have here every definition of a hero. I especially like the way you photographed the Iwo Jima Monument." There was a pause, and then Mr. Wilcox asked me, "Can I keep this?" I said "Sure..." somewhat surprised. He took my print and went to the office and placed it in an oak tag folder and placed it on his desk. I can honestly say he blew my mind that day. And for that he will always have my respect and admiration.

I had Mr. Paulson in my 9th-grade Social Studies class. During that time I was part of a model UN class. Mr. Paulson was a good teacher at a time when the war in Vietnam was at its peak. The invasion of Cambodia was underway, and it seemed like the Vietnam War would last forever. He had a more modern look and style which made him interesting. Like so many people that I enjoyed, I am sorry I did not get to know him better.

This is comet Neowise. I drove to Lake Berryessa on July 22nd to see it. It wasn't until 10:30 pm that you could see it. The comet was very faint even at the comet's closest point to earth, which was 64 million miles. What was really impressive was the view I had of the Milky Way. There you could see the stars without the lights of civilization spoiling the view.

Comet Neowise 22 July 2020 at Lake Berryessa, Ca.

In the summer of 1969, just before the moon landing, my father took me to Niagra Falls to see how the US Army Corp of Engineers diverted water away from the American Falls in order to shore up the cliff and removed rocks and debris. Rumour was a human skull was found.
