Phyllis Locken Asleson died February 10, 1997 as a result of complications from the treatment of breast cancer. Phyllis was 50 years of age. She was surrounded by her dear family during her final hospitalization. She was buried June 7, 1997 in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Ulen, Minnesota, her husband Bruce's hometown.
Phyllis has been missed at the previous reunions I have attended. She was a kind, gentle soul with whom I was privileged to have known, and shared many fun yet deep, meaningful conversations. Phyllis was yet another Augie gem, who made our experience there so very special. Thanks for the information regarding her.
Phyllis was my big sister when I came to Augustana Academy. She was kind, helpful and her smile always made me feel special. I am a breast cancer survivor and feel very sad that she lost that battle. We shall meet again!
Phyllis and I had a lot of contact during my time as a high school counselor in Moorhead. I lived only a couple of blocks from her and her husband. I also joined her church in Fargo. We took Norwegian classes together, and I often had supper with her and her family before the class. She was a kind, gentle and gracious person and such a joy to spend time with.
After knowing each other at AA, Phyllis and I went to Concordia College, Moorhead, where we roomed together for 3 years.. We stayed in contact through the years through Christmas letters, family pictures, and visits back to CC when Phyllis lived in nearby Fargo, ND.
I remember talking with her the summer before her second diagnosis when she was celebrating nearly 10 yrs of being cancer free. Then the final check up had shown something unusual. We spoke when she was sitting at their lake home as she enjoyed that beautiful environment with the realization she had a difficult journey ahead.
Phyllis was a soft spoken, gentle person with enormous intellect and talent. I loved her as a friend and sister, and miss her still. I wish so much that she was going to be with us at our 50th reunion. She was taken from us far too early.
Phyllis Locken and I were in school together from 8th grade through Senior year at Augustana Academy. We were confirmed together at Scandinavia Lutheran Church, rural Aberdeen, SD. We were great friends and shared many things together through those years. Phyllis was my roommate at the Academy our Freshman and Sophomore years and we sang in a trio with Rana our Senior year. I was in contact with Phyllis the years following graduation also and miss her Christmas letters and photos very much. God bless her memory and talents she so graciously shared with all of us. Miss you Phyllis!
