Mello was one of those rare souls put on this earth...he had a way of bringing a smile to anyone's face, always eager to laugh and enjoy life. He made anyone who knew him laugh, and not many people could resist his humor or his charms.
I remember when he and his family went back to Mexico for a short time while we were in Jr.High, and he was my and Michele's faithful penpal. He always had a story to share. He told some whoppers, but they were always entertaining, to say the least. I helped him babysit his younger brothers and sisters, even taking them trick-or-treating one year...a big job for someone who only had 7th grade Spanish to communicate with them!
He has been gone a long time, but still think of him so often, and know he's at work making sure none of us ever forget him. Not that we ever could.
I miss you to this day, and will always love you my friend.
I think Mello passed away in 1991... I remember Betsy calling me when I was packing to move up to UNI to let me know... and I started up there fall of 1991.
I don't know how he did it, but he was able to talk me into almost anything. He was a lot of fun to hang out with, and a loyal friend. I miss you everyday brother. I'm sorry I wasn't there.
I still think of him from time to time- the good and bad times we got into. He was always the best buddy a guy could have with the right advice at the right time. I was away in the USMC when he died. When I found out about his death it set me back and still saddens me to this day.
He had a smile that would light up the halls of school. And I remember when I first met him in class and asked him his name. He was so shy, and when he said his name, I kept asking, "What?" I couldn't figure out what he was saying! After I asked him to repeat it a few times, he got a little short tempered with me and put a little base behind it. HAHA> I finally had to have him spell it. M E L L O. Then he got a little ticked off because I was joking with him, "What kind of name is that?" Eventually, he laughed, too and that shy person that I first met completely left and our wild and crazy Mello emerged. He could always make us laugh and yes, like Betsy said ... he was our penpal when he went back to Mexico. He'd write, "To my sexy girlfriend," and then always sign, "Your sexy Mexican Bartolome Mello Ahedo." So sweet. First of all, I wasn't sexy and I wasn't his girlfriend. HAHA. I also remember talking to him on the phone and his Mom would be yelling at him in the background. I couldn't understand what she was saying, but it seemed like she was talking so fast, and he'd yell at her back. I'd tell him to stop yelling at his Mother, and he'd say that was the way they talked and that she wasn't talking fast. So hilarious. He probably deserved to get yelled at. Always into something! I went to his funeral with my daughter, Jasmine and another little one I was babysitting, and the funeral was so packed that people had to stand against the walls. It was one of the saddest days I can remember. He has been on my mind and in my heart for all of these years, and is most certainly missed. What a light he shined on so many of us in the much too short time we had him with us.
Mello, I miss seeing your face. I remember how you would tease me about being my boyfriend. I used to get so embarrased. I remember one time after high school when you and another classmate of ours showed up at my door, actually looking for my next door neighbor and I had my sister answer the door because I did not want you to bother me. LOL, I should have because that is the last time I actually saw your face. God loved you more, so he knew what was best for you.
Mello was the best man at my first wedding and I miss him alot. He even got me kicked out of jefferson our junior year. I will always remeber the times rodney, mello and I got in to trouble. Rest in peace.
