Wylie Buechel Allen
COLUMBIA -- Wylie Buechel Allen died Monday, March 28, 2011, at home following a brief but courageous battle with colon cancer. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2011, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the memorial service. A private family burial service will be held at a later date. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Wylie, son of Elizabeth Buechel Allen and the late McCollum Allen Jr., was born March 5, 1955 in Columbia. He graduated from Myers Park High School in Charlotte, where he was an outstanding prep athlete in football, track, basketball, and in karate. He earned all-conference honors in football as a safety and receiver in both his junior and senior seasons. He graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Media Communications. Wylie worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry in North Carolina and California over many years prior to moving back to South Carolina. He greatly valued strong friendships with his co-workers and patrons over the course of his working life.
He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth B. Allen of Columbia; two brothers, McCollum Allen III and D. Bryan Allen (Angel) of Columbia; four nephews, Justin M. Allen, David E. Allen, Luke M. Allen, Patrick I. Allen of Columbia; aunts and uncle, Margaret Stokes, Lillian and Douglas Chavous, and Sara Rye, all of Columbia.
The family would like to express appreciation to the doctors, nurses and caregivers supporting Wylie during the course of his illness.
