Charlotte, North Carolina - Brodie Griffith Dowd, 64, of Charlotte, NC, died June 5, 2021, of cardiac and pulmonary complications at Atrium Health Union Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife, JoAnn S. Dowd, in 2009. He was the son of the late Gail Griffith Dowd and the late William Carey Dowd, III of Charlotte. He was the grandson and namesake of the late Brodie S. Griffith, who was the associate publisher of both The Charlotte News and The Charlotte Observer, and the late Thelma Wilkinson Griffith. Brodie (known to family as Grif) graduated from Myers Park High School and spent his career as an accomplished printer in Charlotte.
He will be remembered for his quick wit and intelligence, sense of humor, savviness on the grill, and generosity to family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Lauren Dowd, and her partner, Chris Rogers of Rockwell, NC, and his son, Parker Griffith Dowd, and his wife, Whitney K. Dowd, of Belmont, NC. Survivors also include three grandchildren – Oliver Dowd, Hadley Dowd, and Marin Dowd of Belmont, NC. He leaves a special sister, Eloise Dowd Miller, who gave him comfort and with whom he lived for the past few years, of Monroe, NC, a brother, William Carey Dowd, IV and his wife, Charlotte Dowd, of Charlotte, a sister, Melissa Ann Dowd, and her husband, Curtis Seltzer, of Blue Grass, VA, and a sister-in-law, Mary B. Dowd, of Charlotte. Also surviving are three nieces-Jennifer Dowd Gomes, and her partner Ashook Vangal of Charlotte, Katherine Dowd Butcher, and her husband, Matthew Butcher, of Greenville, NC, and Mary Rebecca "Molly" Wilkinson Seltzer of San Francisco, CA, and one nephew, William Christenbury "Chris" Dowd, of Charlotte. Also surviving is family friend, Sarah Ellison. He also leaves many cousins, a great-niece, and a great-nephew.
A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Brodie will be held on Friday, June 11 from 3-5pm at Tribute and Tallent Funeral Home, 1937 N. Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte NC 28205. Brodie's interests were varied, from flowers and photography, to astronomy and airplanes. He loved his family dearly, but struggled with depression after the death of his wife. The family recommends that those wishing to make memorial donations contribute to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.
