Welcome to the 2025 Edition of the PMC Alumni Newsletter!

Message from Terry Travis -
Vice President for University Advancement

Dear PMC Alumni,

It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the newly revitalized Pennsylvania Military College Alumni Newsletter. As you know, your dedicated classmates, Ron Romanowicz '68 and the late Sheldon "Shelley" Schwartz '60, painstakingly put a newsletter together for many years. I am deeply grateful for their hard work and commitment to keep PMC alumni informed.

Following extensive feedback from alumni like you, we are launching this renewed communication effort to strengthen the bonds that unite our distinguished PMC community with one another and with Widener University.

Over the last eighteen months, we have achieved meaningful progress together. In addition to the re-launch of this newsletter, through the work of the Legacy Committee, new scholarship opportunities for ROTC students have been established for students who embody PMC's values of leadership and service. Your unwavering commitment to preserving PMC's legacy has made these accomplishments possible.

This newsletter represents our commitment to you - consistent, meaningful communication that keeps our community connected and informed. And it is the foundation of a larger strategy to enhance connectedness within the PMC alumni network.

To guide this initiative, I have established the PMC Alumni Advisory Committee, a dedicated group of 10 alumni that works directly with me and my team. This committee will meet three times a year (with sub-committee meetings in between) and serves as a vital bridge between Widener University and the broader PMC community. This body will communicate with the Legacy Committee and any other alumni groups, while serving as a voice for PMC interests and traditions.

Our Four Strategic Priorities
Working together, we will focus on these key objectives:

1. Expand Alumni Volunteerism - supporting meaningful opportunities for you to be engaged with university initiatives
2. Strengthen Alumni Connectedness - developing digital platforms and opportunities to bring our community together
3. Share Feedback about Alumni Interests - ensuring that the university understands the needs and interests of the group
4. Honor PMC Traditions - supporting initiatives that preserve our traditions

How You Can Get Involved

Your participation will shape the future of PMC alumni engagement. Here are immediate ways to connect:

Join the Communication Network: This reimagined newsletter would not be possible without the great work of Jim Love '68, Gerry Ferguson '70, and Stu Perlmutter '70, members of the Advisory Committee's communication subcommittee. If you are interested in contributing content ideas, sharing alumni news, or volunteering your expertise, please reach out to them at jimlove361@gmail.com, gfferg@comcast.net, or stuperl@yahoo.com.

Share Your Story: We want to feature alumni achievements, milestones, and service contributions in upcoming issues. Your experiences are important to record - they inspire students and fellow alumni.

Attend Events: Watch for announcements about Homecoming and lunches or get-togethers in your area.

Looking Ahead

The strength of PMC has always resided in the character and dedication of its alumni. By working together, we will build a more vibrant, connected, and enduring community that honors our proud past while contributing to our bright future.

Thank you for your continued support.

With sincere gratitude and respect,

Terry Travis

Message from the PMC Legacy Committee:
Honoring the Past, Investing in the Future

Over the past two years, Class Leaders from Pennsylvania Military College have come together to form the PMC Legacy Committee - a dedicated group committed to preserving the proud traditions of PMC while supporting the next generation of leaders.

With the support of Dr. Stacey Robertson and her team at Widener University, the committee has developed a vision focused on growth through recruitment and meaningful financial support. One of the most significant milestones has been the creation of an endowed scholarship.

The PMC Legacy ROTC Scholarship is awarded annually to a Company A freshman pursuing both academic excellence and an ROTC commission.

This past October, the first scholarship was awarded, marking a historic moment for PMC alumni and future cadets alike. The endowment has already surpassed $160,000 and continues to grow thanks to the generous contributions of alumni, friends, and family. The scholarship is funded through the annual investment income of the endowment, ensuring it will support students in perpetuity

As Dr. Robertson shared during a recent meeting, "This is a Win/Win" - the PMC ROTC Legacy Scholarship helps students access a Widener education, and the military gains a newly commissioned officer. The scholarship is seamlessly integrated into the University's financial aid packages, helping to ease the financial burden for deserving students.

We are excited to begin sharing quarterly updates on our fundraising progress and invite you to be part of this enduring legacy. To contribute, please click this link.

Thank you for your continued support. Together, we are ensuring that the PMC legacy lives on for generations to come.

Sincerely,
Chuck Cantley '69, Bob Hawley '62, Bob Miller '69, Dave Esto '70, Norm Helmold '69, Stu Perlmutter '70, Gerry Ferguson '70, Jim Hogg '69, Rick Urban '69, Dan Gascoyne '69, Andy LaStella '69, Joe Vaccaro '74, Craig Glassner '72, Jim Love '68, Les Ware '75

ROTC Dauntless Battalion Commissions 2025 Officers

The Dauntless Battalion marked a proud milestone as five Company A students took the oath as U.S. Army second lieutenants during the 2025 Commissioning Ceremony. Honoring tradition, celebrating service, and inspired by words from PMC alumnus Robert Hawley '62, the event reflected Widener's deep military roots and bright future. PMC Cadets Honor Their Fallen Brothers
Memorial Day 2025

"Let nobody forget there was once a place of honor in Chester called Pennsylvania Military College." -Jim Butler '73

What began in 2012 with a quiet gesture from Jim Butler '73 has grown into a cherished Memorial Day tradition. This past May, PMC alumni and families gathered at Old Main for the 13th annual ceremony to honor fallen brothers, ensuring that the legacy of Pennsylvania Military College lives on. Read more about the ceremony at the link below.

A Mother's Day Tradition:
Larry Liss '63 & Art Liss '67

What started as a parade in 1958 sparked a lifelong journey for Larry Liss '63 and Art Liss '67, two sons of immigrants who followed their calling at Pennsylvania Military College. Their paths led to distinguished military service - including Larry's heroic Vietnam rescue, recently honored with the Silver Star. Their full story, found at the link below, is one of family, character, and a legacy rooted in a single red rose.

Charles A. Cantley, Jr. '69, '75
Receives the 2025 Alumni Service Award

From mechanic to military leader to global executive, Charles "Chuck" Cantley, Jr. '69, '75 began his journey at Pennsylvania Military College and came full circle through decades of service to his alma mater. This year's Alumni Service Award honors his leadership, legacy, and dedication - most notably his role in launching the PMC ROTC Legacy Scholarship.

Honoring Our Fallen

In a moving piece by Jack Gale '70, a recent archival effort led to the discovery of six cadets who gave their lives in service before World War I including five in the Civil War and one in the Philippine Insurrection.

Class of 1968 - PMC Unit Patch

The PMC Unit Patch for the Class of 1968 was designed to give class members a unique identifier, and to encourage unity and honor legacy. The colors are gold, red, blue, gray, and black, and symbolize the journey from the birth of PMC (gold and red) to the present Widener University (blue and gold), using gray and black to represent our daily experiences as cadets. The patch is registered with the Library of Congress for copyrights and intended for use only by members of the PMC cadet corps.

The PMC Unit Patch was created by Miguel "Mike" Torres '68 and produced by Signature Patches.

Color Description:

Gold: PMC legacy color that was and is still used for the institution
Red: PMC color
Blue: Widener's replacement for red
Grey/Black: Cadet Delta uniform colors. Along with the shape of the patch, these colors symbolize the Long Grey Line
