Hey Andrew... I will work on getting the final pre-print versions but they may be too cumbersome to upload here.  I have to look into it.

It was a real family effort. Carla Surma '78 designed them in collaboration with the women on the committee, and then Jeff Juhasz fabricated them. We thought they turned out great!  I know '74 and '75 plan to borrow them for their reunions and they will be installed back at Lane in March for Women's History Month.

Stay tuned. I will see if I can get pdf files or find a home for them with a link for everybody.

Is that Dr. (Principal) Racky in that one picture along the bottom?

If I recall, he was our principal  for freshman year or sophomore too?  I recall Stormin' Norman was there after Dr. R.

Mazurakas eventually became Principal too later on.

I can't recall dinners i ate last week but sometimes this old sh*t just comes back to ya.

Andrew..........you got that Bond 007 look about you.  Cool.  Thanks for the affirmation on the compass.  And if that artwork you show is your work, wow, you are richly blessed with talent. Nice.   Way cooler than those 'pillow block' and 'bearing support' items we drew in drafting!!!!

Jeff is in the graphics everything business.  He owns Fullline Printing on Chicago Ave... with his brother Steve '75 and their pressman Brian '85.  He prints our beautiful alumni magazine and holiday cards too. Check them out!

Andrew... I'm certainly no artist.  But, I can say that 2 years of LTHS drafting (Mr. Rafac) has come in handy more times than I can count.  Dealing with home remodels and contractors, I can read a blueprint.  Working in IT I can use drawing tools to create diagrams.  I laid out my own garden beds with drawings so the landscapers did exactly what I wanted.

Print shop, too (Mr. Sims... The Man, The Myth, The Legend). So many people use computers to do typesetting nowadays they don't know what the difference is between an "en space" and an "em space."  What's a "point?"  What's a "pica?"  What's "leading?"  And I can't tell you how many times I've said, "No. That's a typestyle, not a font." I was watching some show on TV the other day and told my wife... "Hey!  That's a Merganthaler Linotype!  I can go to the local Home Show, look at the "modern" decorations, and say "That's a California Job Case!"

And every homeowner should have LTHS Wood Shop and Electric Shop.  At least I can go to the hardware store and get a "crosscut saw" and not a "rip saw."  Know the difference between a pair of adjustable pliers, slip-joint pliers and vice grips.  I can wire in a switch, a socket, or a ceiling fan and not kill myself.  Although, I will say I spent WAY too much time in Mr. Miller's Wood Shop grinding plane irons.  Never seen a plane iron since.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... college graduates nowadays come out not knowing how to BUILD anything.  And that's a great loss.  Even scientists need to know how to build things.

Bob,

Two years of drafting has served me wel in my theater work. I can read a ground plan and elevation as well as any designer! Better than some, now that those skills have become replaced by CAD. And it put me ahead of the game in college, when it came building sets. Sure, I can use a band saw!

Though it's become illegible with time, I replaced cursive with block printing years ago.

Back in HS I was not a fan of shop class. Liked drafting and Mr. Lattimore. At that time was looking at a future in higher education. Well a turn in my life when I went back to grad school in my early 40's for a Masters in Education, I wound up doing satellite installs on the side to pay for school and my family. That changed everything. I now own a Home Automation company. I look at drawings and modify them all the time. Wood and electric shop has become soo important in this life, as we do mostly retrofit and remodels. Who knew how important these fundamentals from Lane would be to me!!!

Michelle,

I will happily drive up from Charlotte, NC for such an event!

Any excuse for a party!

But, what makes you think 65 is retirement age? 65 is just "middle aged". I plan on being the oldest living LTHS grad when I'm over 100!

65 might not be retirement for all of us (including myself) but it sounds like a good reason for a 76'r party.

Kevin Donohue (Donohue)

A retirement age party would be fun.  Robert, you'd have to live to about 130 to make 65 middle age.  Good luck!

Bob... I love your rosy optimism!  I'm surprised we haven't heard from those young whippersnappers who are only turning 64 next year... but they can practice for 2024.  Sheesh!  Remember when 2024 sounded so far off in the distance?!?!?  We have lots of time to think about what our little celebration would look like and when and where it should be held.  In the meantime, think about a mini meet up at the dinner portion of the Alumni golf outing on August 25th if you're in town. I'll buy you your first drink!   2022 LTAA Golfing for Grants (lanetechalumni.org)

Michelle, as one of those young whippersnappers, I have to say retirement has been great. Going on four years and looking forward to many more!

Michelle...

You know, I had a heart valve replacement last fall and the surgeon told me these typically last 20 years or more.  I told the doc,,, "Well, you better order a couple more of these for me right now!"

You Chicagoans plan these little get togethers on weeknights (8/25)!  I'll actually be up for one quick day on the 27th.  My son is competing in the Chicago Triathalon. I just want to come up and watch him drag his dead body out of the lake after a long, open water swim, then jump on a bike!

So, plan the soiree for 2023 some weekend!

Going to the Indiana State Fair this weekend.  Get some fried stuff on a stick and check out the pigs n' cows..

What is this "retirement" of which you speak? I expect to die in the classroom -- or perhaps in an online lecture -- in the middle of a sentence.

Greetings!

Would love to see a gathering of the 76er's 65 Club. Sorry, to those who will continue to working. I actually turn 65 this fall, will work part time til May, then spend time with grandkids and other things of my choosing.
If such an event we're to occur, I/we will do our utmost to attend. Rob Young

Hi Michelle,

What a wonderful idea!  With enough advance notice, count me in!

Have I told you lately...Michelle, You Rock! smiley

And to all who posts to this site, I enjoy all of your comments and thoughts!   I know, this... from someone who rarely posts.  I am hoping that someday, I will have time to post.

Hugs to all,

Hey 76ers!  A get-together to celebrate 64 or 65 sounds great.  Count me in!!  Not sure about this retirement thing.  It's over-rated as I took a retirement package in 2019 and now I'm so busy I can't believe I had time to work back then.  I think I might take a job and go back to work so I can have time to relax!!  Hope to see you all soon.  Remember, in the great words of Paul McCartney - "will you still need me, will you still feed me when I'm 64?"

From another alum on a parallel track..  Mario, my husband of 33 years,  ('nam vet circa 1969/USMC, retired from CPD, and Aviation Security) has dealt with diabetes for 10+ years and is now staring down ESRD. His youngest sister offered a kidney first but her own oncologist definitively said "DON'T." His second sister, G-d willing will follow through on HER offer, but she sometimes (like now) goes days without contacting him and thinks her vitamin regimen would FOR SURE benefit him too... Our daughter, 20, offered but hasn't heard back from her donor coordinator and would have to schedule it exceedingly carefully as she's a rising 3rd-year at UChicago. If anyone knows a young whippersnapper who would want to offer this old salt a Type O kidney, please private-message me. Thanks very much for your time and consideration.

Hey Tim, definitely hear you about being busy. I retired in 2018 and like you keep asking myself how I had time to do anything while working. Janet heard a great phrase a few months ago.... we are in our "Golden Circle". Old enough to do what we want and to  travel wherever and whenever, but young enough to still carry our own bags. Let's all make the most of our Golden Circle years!

Let's see...
Just put in an entirely new HVAC system, got a 30th anniversary trip coming up. A complete master bathroom reno, and two kid's weddings. Who says I'm going to retire any time soon???

Hello to all 76er’s!

Since not all of us will be entertaining retirement or turning 65 soon! One thing we will all be facing somewhere in the near future is Medicare! So, let’s have a “Getting Prepared for Medicare party”!  🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Whether luxuriating in blissful retirement or toiling till the end like Mr. Bliss...

or any of the possible iterations in between.

Celebrating the fact that we're still able to get together is good enough for me!

Bob, I'm with you on a weekend date, I just ask that we avoid May, as that's a super-busy LTAA month. Let's keep it easy-peasy and no/low cost so everyone can enjoy themselves as we navigate medicare.

YIKES!

Hey everybody!
I'm all in for a party in 2023. I was bummed that I couldn't join the 50th reunion recently and I'll be out of town August 25th too, but I'm game for any planning and look forward to hearing when, where, what. I'll be 64 and I have no plans for retiring, too many people on my payroll. #2 is finally off on her own, but there's no end for #5. Hahahaha
