Andrew... I'm certainly no artist. But, I can say that 2 years of LTHS drafting (Mr. Rafac) has come in handy more times than I can count. Dealing with home remodels and contractors, I can read a blueprint. Working in IT I can use drawing tools to create diagrams. I laid out my own garden beds with drawings so the landscapers did exactly what I wanted.
Print shop, too (Mr. Sims... The Man, The Myth, The Legend). So many people use computers to do typesetting nowadays they don't know what the difference is between an "en space" and an "em space." What's a "point?" What's a "pica?" What's "leading?" And I can't tell you how many times I've said, "No. That's a typestyle, not a font." I was watching some show on TV the other day and told my wife... "Hey! That's a Merganthaler Linotype! I can go to the local Home Show, look at the "modern" decorations, and say "That's a California Job Case!"
And every homeowner should have LTHS Wood Shop and Electric Shop. At least I can go to the hardware store and get a "crosscut saw" and not a "rip saw." Know the difference between a pair of adjustable pliers, slip-joint pliers and vice grips. I can wire in a switch, a socket, or a ceiling fan and not kill myself. Although, I will say I spent WAY too much time in Mr. Miller's Wood Shop grinding plane irons. Never seen a plane iron since.
I've said it before and I'll say it again... college graduates nowadays come out not knowing how to BUILD anything. And that's a great loss. Even scientists need to know how to build things.
