Michelle... let's see... May in Indianapolis... 325,000 people watching cars drive real fast and turn left for 500 miles.
Yes, I'd also say we'd want to avoid May.

Who knew a simple question regaridng a turning 65 gathering would generate a flurry of replies......I can't wait for the all knowing Kenny O to offer up ideas !!!!

Rob, nice to see you and your response. Retired military has its perks. And thank you for your service Rob.  Life is good.

It would be nice to have some type, formal or informal gathering.  I am in.

Makes sense to support a Lanite if the place can hold the size of the group.  Then again, it may just be a few dozen that can make it.  Either way, it's a great idea.  We need to think that as we age....ANY excuse to gather is a good thing!  Case and point, the 50th gathering.  I am still thinking about that and how enjoyable it was.

Regarding retirement, it's a sticky wicket for many.  So many things factor into that decision.  And the uncertainty of the economy is one major factor to ponder.  And for some, in my case, I truly love what I do and am not ready to walk away.  And my youngest just turned 17 so that too is a thought for me.  I tried it for a year last year and found myself missing the hustle, the people and making/developing people into the best versions of themselves.  That we all have come to that point in our lives when we should be thinking about that end play, eyeballing retirement and enjoying more free time ......well that's the first step in doing it.  Getting a plan in place with goals and a timeline.  Analyze the finances, the 401's, 403's, IRA's  and making moves to start the plan in motion.  We are 76ers, we WILL figure it out.

Mr. Bliss........you will be fine.

I will be (nearly) off the grid for several weeks starting next week.  Back in China opening another facility.

Be well all.

Having "worked" in the arts for much of my career (one reason I have no plans to retire), I'm ALWAYS up for a party! Not picky about what we call it. laugh My only preference is that it's some place in the city, so I can Uber there. Some of you folks who drive probably SHOULD Uber too. Especially if there's boozahol.

I do love my job -- teaching college -- so working past 65 isn't an issue. Also, I've been teaching some course online since before The Plague, so even once I stop working full-time, I'll still supplement my income that way. As long as there's wifi, I can work from a cruise ship!

Finally made it over to the Chinatown Museum to see the amazing mural that fellow 76er, Rich Lo, painted.  Thought you would like to see it and I would recommend going and checking it out in-person.

I'm glad to know some have retired and some have chosen not too. I'm winding down but only a wee bit of time to 80%.
Great to see the mural by Rich Lo at the Chinese museum. My husband and I are running my parents' restaurant in North Riverside and I was interviewed by those involved in this museum and I'm excited to see the new exhibit in the fall about the Chinese immigration in previous generations. I gave them the history of our restaurant dating from the year we graduated until now so it's celebrating the 46th anniversary this year.

Lisa we need to come check you out!

I was working at the LTAA Archive Space today and came across these gems... 1948 Lettterman's Club recognition dinner and a hall pass for Rodgers Raiders.  I don't recall our "Letterpersons" looking that dapper!

Michelle,

I'd love for any to visit but you might need to Uber it if you have one of our Mai Tai's or Dr Fong's.

Jon, the view from your place is beautiful, the lake, LSD and being so close to Wrigley Field!

Life has become a little too casual and grungy so refreshing to see suits and ties in the 40's and 50's. I remember having to dress up just to go downtown!

Hi all,

I am LOVING all the posts and looking forward to more plans for a "Turning 65",  "Medicare, here we come" , or just a "76'er" party.  I do love me a party!

And, Hello, Lisa!  It's great to see you posting!   What Memories you bring up!  I remember Chef Shangri-La and will definitely look you up and visit the next time we are in Chicago.

Andrew, close your eyes, can't believe I'm posting again.  smiley  Go, Lane, Go!

Okay so here's the challenge for this week...

We're hosting some of the oldest alumni in the LTAA office next month and I want to have vintage candy on hand to spur convo and if diets allow... be consumed.  What is the oldest candy besides old-timey stick candy you can recall?

I just read Good & Plenty is the oldest brand still produced. It was introduced in 1893. Bit o' Honey was 1924 right from Chicago.

Anyone remember Brach's candies ? They were once a successful local company that had a large manufacturing presence in Chicago.

There's a candy store in downtown Indy that sells specialty candy, too.  All the old stuff.  And penny candies.  Foreign candies and soda pops.  The only place I know where I can get Ting... grapefruit flavored pop from the Caribbean.  And those great Japanese fruit candies wrapped in rice paper where you just eat the wrappers!

Remember when Pocky used to be hard-to-get foreign candy?  Now it's a fad and in all the grocery stores.

Wowie!  Who knew the Bicentennials had such a sweet tooth!  I opted for Root Beer Barrels, Banana Bikes and Bullseyes but so many options for round two. I forgot about half the stuff you guys mentioned but my teeth hurt just remembering it all.  Adding dental to our medicare plans will be a major theme at next year's party!  Thanks for all the great ideas including the candy store right by my house Greg.

Hey... this Sunday is the last day to donate to the student food pantry at Lane (in-person).  From 10AM-noon we'll be colecting non-perishabe foods that kids can put in their backpacks and eat without the need for a stove or microwave. (you'd be surprised how many are food-insecure). I'll be brewing coffee and offering up nosh at the Alumni Office, 3525 West Peterson. Come by for a hug and bring bottled water or Gatorade for the kids which is what the pantry is short on right now, or just show up for moral support and comic relief. While not a candy of sorts.......Hostess Twinkees.  A perennial favorite still today.  Frozen or at room temp.  Yummy.   Same for Charleston Chews bite size.  Frozen they are yummy and fun to crunch.  And they won't break your teeth.
