Andrew,

I may have gone there once or twice during my Von Humboldt days, but I mostly hung out in the area north of Hirsch. When Von Humboldt opened up the branch (7th and 8th grades) located on California between Hirsch and Le Moyne, I spent more time hanging around at all the shops and stores on North Avenue between Rockwell and California. One frequent stopping ground was Shapiros, by North and California. That place had a lot of toys, magazines, comic books and other novelties. I would go there to get the latest Mad magazines and Marvel comics, Matchbox cars, etc. They also had a lot of the candies there. But Shapiro was a bit leery of us young guys hanging out there. He would watch us like a hawk, thinking we were gonna shoplift or do some other nefarious deeds. My friends and I weren't into that kind of mischief though.

Yes, a reunion in Maui would be great! Aloha and e komo mai! πŸŒΊπŸ€™ Andrew, I believe Kristi has moved back to Chicago? She lived in Honolulu for many years. Anyway, pick an island, any island, for a reunion! They're all different, all beautiful. Great idea! <>>

I'd have to get the TC helicopter.

Have you seen the remake of Magnum PI?  Pretty bad.
The Hawaii 5-0 remake is pretty good, though.

Tickets go on sale for this once-in-an-alum's-lifetime event tomorrow. (acutally... secret squirrel just for Bicentennials... it is now open)  rb.gy/qvwztx

The Mayor has declared October 1st Fritz Pollard Day in Chicago.  Same with Cook County. It will be an incredible day for the whole community and something we can all be proud of.  Track guys... Louis Carr is reading the dedication before we unveil 4 commemorative plaques in the stadium.

Fritz was amazing.  Let me know if you all want some background. I'll be sending out an eblast to LTAA mailing list conatacts tomorrow with Pollard's story.

Andy, you can pick up your hat at the event or the office or we can ship it but if you plan on going to the game, pick up there is best.  And thank you for the donation. We are only up to about 7K with a 20K budget so if anyone else feels the spirit, the donation site is lanetechalumni.org/donate

If we have a group attend, it would be fun to go out for a beverage after the game.

Damn, wish I had known about this a week ago. Have a meeting in Dallas at a conference Sat morning and then flying home. I would have rescheduled and stopped by on my way home.

Hey Calvimontes... join the LTAA and you'll get all kinds of news!  BTW... Louis Carr is going to read the dedication on Pollard Day before they unveil the commemorative plaques.

I hope you all come out for this.  I was there last Monday to test the new PA system and walking into the stadium again was pretty cool with all the feels.  (Plus it looks way nicer now than when we were there) Tickets are $5.50 online.  Let's get a Bicentennital group togehter in the stands.  I will be relieved of official duties by kick off and would love to spend time with my brothers and sisters!

On another note... thinking about Ramsey Lewis' passing this week.  I recall going to see him after prom in 1974. He always said in interviews that he hated those early "teenager" shows at the London House and Mr. Kellys but I thought it was EVERYTHING!  I loved being at the London House.  I felt so sophisticated and listening to him for the first time inspired my life-long love of jazz.  RIP!

Robert Cole ... Class of '76 fun-fact ... for the reboot Hawaii Five O, Season 8, Episode 3, entitled "Kau pahi, ko'u kua. Kau pu, ko'u po'o" (first aired around October  2017), the studio shot part of the episode in our own Kristi Adachi's Hawaii condominium.

Yes, Marion Bastle and I watched the Hawaii 5 episode with Kristi Adachi in her condo in the Hancock. It was October of 2017. I group of fellow 76ers including our own Ken Ortiz went there to see it for a watch party on Oct 6, however it turned out the actual show date was after that so Marion and I went by Kristi's again on October 13th and watched it then.

WOW!  I'll have to go back and watch that episode!

My backyard was the scene of a photo shoot for the Sears catalog once.  Shot a grill.  Does that count?
It's scary to see how much expensive meat they wasted.  Took hundreds of dollars of beef tenderloin.  Painted them to make them look perfect.  Sprayed them with plastic to preserve them.  The party I could have had with all that MEAT!

Norm,

I remember that day. What a fun time it was. There were a couple of other 76'ers there also. What a great view there was from the Hancock Center and I still have a few pictures from there. Because it was getting close to Halloween, I found out that not only were we there in the flesh, we were there in spirit too. See?

P.S. - Looking forward to Sunday smiley

Kristi Adachi

Hi everyone!

Yes that was a really fun evening, two for those of us who missed the memo!

I'm bummed that I will miss the memorial football game on October 1st. I'll turn 64 like a lot of my fellow

Class of '76rs!

I've been back here in Honolulu, the increased crime even on Michigan Avenue became too unsettling for me. I will go back every now and then like before. As to quote/paraphrase my dear friend John Simmers, " It's all good."

I took this pic before I drafted the email.

Janet Peterson (Ingraffia)

Hello all. Since moving to Florida about 2.5 years ago, Pete and I survived our first major hurricane! I have to say it was pretty scary. Last year we had hurricane windows put in our house, so at least we could see out. Then on our lanai, we have a covered area. So we had hurricane screens put up there. So that's where we put all our outdoor furniture and other outdoor stuff. We closed up the screens and almost no wind came through. So we survived just fine, our dogs survived just fine and there was no damage to the house. The yard was a different story. We lost two trees and a third was salvaged. Our development of 1100 homes looks like a war zone. Hundreds of trees knocked over. Limbs everywhere. There are more signs down than are left standing. We are lucky since we live in the newer section. We didn't lose power for very long. Many of our neighbors still don't have power. We were without TV and internet up until a few hours ago. So communication was difficult. I appreciate all those who reached out to us to make sure we were safe. You guys are the best!

I am enclosing a picture of the hurricane screens I was talking about. That was money well spent, and we didn't have to bring everything inside.

Janet,

Good to hear that your Florida property mostly made it thru the hurricane unscathed. My wife and I bought property in Marco Island in January this year, we had "impact" windows installed last month (it took 7 months for the supplier to make / ship them). We are not in Florida (in Chicago), but we understand that our property is OK. We plan to spend some of our winters in Marco.

I hope that our classmates with homes or relatives in florida were as fortunate as we were. It was a very nasty storm.

regards - Ralph Bennett '76

Last month, in my Illinois home community ; Park Ridge, they were filming for Chicago Fire at the historic Pickwick Theater.  Interesting to see what goes into filming a show like that on site.  My teenage son as well as gobs of others, was lucky enough to be an extra milling around.  Will be interesting to see the episode.  Doubtful we will be really able to see any of those extras.  I was also amazed at how they close off the area with baracades well from the view of cameras.  And the lighting they used....wow.

Our Florida home in New Smyrna Beach was undamaged by Ian as was the case for mnay homes on the coast as the trek across the state weakened the hurricane.  A few tears in the screens around the pool and some debris washing up on our beach, that was it.  We are blessed.  The outer bank islands really offer some protections.  As we look at our gulf coast friends.....not so good.

Enjoy the fall colors all.  My daughter who lives in Homer, Alaska just had their first snow !

As I type this, I just saw a printed shirt that said on it, " Touch my coffee and i'll slap you so hard - even Google won't be able to find you"  Laugh out loud funny.      Be well all.  Be safe.

Does anyone have last-known contact info for Jane Shipp (sp?) or Mike Shaughnessy? Looking for both in connection with 50-year grammar school reunion! Thanks for any leads :)

10/11/22 06:46 PM #1473

Michelle Milkovic (Weiner)

Ria there is no record for either of them with the LTAA nor in this database.  Couldn't find Jane for the Women's 50th either.  There is a Mike Shaughnessy in Elmhurst and one in SIlver Lake, Kansas but it's a pretty common name.  Maybe they still have family in Chicago???.

Yes--that would be terrific. Jane and I went to same grammar school in Rogers Park and we have a 50-year reunion coming up (1972-2022)!  You can give her my email address (rmajeske@aol.com). If they'd prefer phone number, I'm glad to provide that as well.

Thank you VERY much!

Actually, if you manage to touch base, please do give my phone # as well (312-885-4193).

I remember the first few weeks of our freshman year at Lane, Jane and I sometimes got a ride from her brother. Don't remember his name--maybe that was Ed. He was member of the "last all male graduating class." :)

Donna,

I did pass all of the contact info you provided along to Janes brother Ed who in turn got it to another sister who should pass it along to Jane. ( Long story and family riff ).  I don't ask too many questions.  Among other things, he said, " I passed along to my sister Mary to forward to my sister Jane Marie - who now goes by Jamie."

So I did what I could for you Donna.  Hopefully Jane/Jamie reaches out to you.

It's the middle of October people........can snow be to far away?

Who's ready for a meet up at Unforgettable Bar?  Whether you're interested in the hat thing or not, it would still be fun to have a group of Bicentennials get together for a couple beers and laughs while our Retirement-Social Security celebration is still a comfortable distance away.

7:00 this Friday!
