That was his method I guess. He was a great bowler with a 208 avg. at the time. He would roll his spare ball on the aisle by courtyard windows into paper towels. He wasn't extending enough and I told him that. I'm sure the battle cry in his head became "let loose the dogs of war and let the racking begin!". anyway he asked if I bowled and I said yes. The challenge was on, the next day I was to meet him at waveland and get two alleys. He then called and made the arrangements himself. When I went there the tall skinny guy who threw governor walker out of the alley, asked if I was bowling Lichtman. I said yes and we talked awhile. He cut me a break and instead of Saul getting two alleys he was hot on we had two in the middle that would level the playing field evenly. Slowly the alley filled up. Seemed like everyone except Silber and ABC news was there to watch. First game I had five strikes to his four, when I asked him the proverbial questions all bowlers know not to ask. "Your throwing great, what foot you starting on?". He couldn't recover and cursed all my relatives living and dead. Of course I pulled back so not to get too far ahead because I felt bad for doing that. Not bad enough to loose, just bad enough to win a little. Of course it came back to the shop were he admitted I got him and the future rematch that never happened. A few weeks later is golfing pennies off the chalk ledges."Hey Anderson, know anything about golf?". "No sir", I replied. "Good, get to work!". I miss him like my dad some days.

Happy sweetest day. Junior and senior year I sent a dozen flowers to someone I really had a crush on signed from a secret admirer. Never could tell her. Also after a few girls in my division didn't get any flowers at all I always sent at least one to them signed the same way. It really made them happy.

Bleacher seats cost upwards of $300 tonight.  Can you remember what we paid for them in 1976?

Marie Costa (McJilton)

I think the price was $1.75.

Hi All!

Might anyone here be a literary or script agent, or can you put me in touch with someone who is?

Thanks!

I remembered $1.00 for bleachers and $2.75 to $3.00 for reserve grandstand which was first ten rows. Then $5.00 for box seats. One drink, one dog , one scorecard and a reserved grandstand was a $5.50 a day adventure. Then about two and a half hours work. A cheap date compared to today where the city tax is more than that.

Grew up at Wrigley Field with my grandfather!  Probably went to hundreds of games with him from the time I was five until I went away to college.  Between seniors and kids, we got reserved seats behind the 1st base line for I think about $2 each.  Saw both of Kenny Holtzman's no-hitters, and Milt Pappas being robbed of his perfect game.  Watched all the Cub greats.  Got lots of signed memorabilia from the Cubs of the 60s and 70s.  Autographed baseball from the entire 1984 championship team.  Lots of signed Fergie Jenkins stuff.  And Don Kessinger (my hero!).  Proudly hanging my Cubs flag outside right now!  It was a GREAT place to grow up!

When I attended the 40th reunion School Tour last month, I was able to purchase a 1976 yearbook, as I used to have all 4 yearbooks (73-76), but they got lost. I wanted to also buy the 1975 yearbook, but those were sold out. Luckily, the school store had one (not for sale), but I was able to take a couple of pictures from it, specifically of the Varsity bowling team page, which I was a member of that year. Which leads me to the following story concerning that particular page :

I dressed pretty casual during my years at Lane, but every once in a while, I "GQ'ed" it, which meant I would go all spiffed out in the latest "trendy" fashions at that time. And we had some pretty wacky styles going on during that time. So, one day in 1975, my Junior year, I "macked it up" and wore a blue silk button down shirt with white flowers, blue polyester pants with a 1" cuff and even blue dress shoes with white rubber soles (they were called "marshmallows"). Not to be confused with "easy walkers" which were sneakers with at least a 3" white rubber platform sole.
So, here I am at school with my "disco Kenny" look that day, but I did not realize that they were doing yearbook pictures that day of our Varsity bowling team at Waveland bowl. So for the group picture, I am in the back (my choice) which is good because I do NOT bowl dressed up. But lo and behold, since I was all dressed up, they ask me to do a solo shot of me bowling and here is the result:

So, the day after our 40th year reunion, I text this picture to my 20 year old Daughter, who has never seen this picture before, with the message "look at what I found". Here is her response:

"Oh my god you were the sportiest nerd ever"

Sporty nerd!! I love it!

Would that be a "SPERD" Ken?  I think you pulled it off fabulously...

Don,

I seem to recall attending a "Grudge match" as I think it was called that. Did you bowl in any of the Lane leagues at Waveland bowl? I was on the Lane league at Waveland my first 3 years, but it was the Monday leagues. I didn't bowl on the Thursday leagues, even though I would drop by sometimes to hang out with fellow bowlers.

Michelle,

I think "SPERD" works well. I always get a kick when my Daughter sees old pictures of me and I have some that are really goofy too. She calls some of those pictures she has seen "blackmail" pictures. She even rolls her eyes at some of the recent pictures I have taken as some of those are silly.

A "grudge" match might be what it was called. Seemed more like a wrestling steel cage match. We are laughing now but it was very real in its day. Lichtman was out for Lane (get it? That's a bowling joke!) superiority. As pirates say "Give no quarter, expect none in return, argh!". He intended to bury me and throw away the shovel.😜  anyway I never bowled for Lane or tried out for bowling. I was interest in conflicting things with respect to time availability. I bowled up on north side. 20th century or northwest bowl.

The actual grudge match came senior year at the Warrior softball game. Where the teachers literally cheated. Some strange substitutions. A lot of the woman came to play and the guys at the time had a fit that I had two or three out there. But they held their own and the score was a lot closer than the teachers liked it or reported it to be. Even the umpires were teachers. I knew we were overpowered but I didn't expect them to bend the rules. I remember some of them as Patti O'day,Barb Grabowski?, Karen Stefani, Helen Bagianis and a few more. Have to see if recorded in my yearbook or credit to anyone else who remembers that softball game.  Hey Julianne did you play?

I'm feeling really torn right now, rooting for the Cubs and the Dodgers! About those bleacher seats at Wrigley Field, it was before 1976 but I also remember $1 bleacher seat tickets. The overarching memory is attending games in the bleachers, having walked there in short shorts (lived really close until 6th grade), and slathering on baby oil to try to get a good tan. No lights, no night games. We sure were naive about sun damage back then.

Robert,

Are there other Cub fans in your neck of the woods? I would think most folks from Indy would be rooting for the Cubs. Even though Cincinatti would technically be closer to Indianapolis (I think). Also, there is a great microbrew pub in Westfield (about 15 miles north on 31) called Grand Junction Brewing.

Grace,

If the Cubs beat the Dodgers and make it to the world series, imagine how insane the Chicagoland area will be. I don't think LA would be that insane, considering they have won a couple of championships in our lifetime. The Cubs have not. I am fearing taking the train to Chicago this coming weekend as if they win tonight, the clinching game could be in Chicago this Saturday night. If they win that game.......imagine the celebrations around the city that night. Bring your bulletproof vests and riot gear.

To tell you the truth, baseball isn't the big sport down here. Colts are the team. I'm flying my Cubs flag, though. I'm in Wrigleyville this weekend and I might walk over to the game Saturday night. When the Cubs make the World Series I'll probably crash on my son's couch, walk over to Wrigley and take in the excitement.

Indy is loaded with good craft brews!

Grace, I think you're really lucky. No matter who wins, you will be happy. However, after growing up in Chicago, my loyalty will always be with the Chicago teams no matter where I live. So I will be watching tonight when the Cubs clinch a spot in the World Series! Go Cubs Go!!!

I'm not sure what's more astounding... that fact that you produced this ticket stub, or the difference in prices!

A bleacher seat was the best place to sit back then!  I would arrive for batting practice and wouldn't leave until the game was over.  Sometimes, I would go and stand outside the Cubs locker room door and collect autographs after the game!  I loved every moment!

Grace Tanaka, how could you!!!!!! I wear my City of Chicago flag pin on my jackert almost every day. Since we have been dealing with the curse of the goat for decades, Cub fans are to be true blue wherever we live. At least that's what I have proclaimed while living in Georgia for 15 years during the Braves runs and now in the LA area for 15 years.  Now I have to find a World Series hat. "Hey Hey Holy Mackerel, no doubt about it, the Cubs are on their way".  Mr. Cub #14 Ernie Banks is cheering in heaven now, with Harry Carey and the rest.

Robert Cole, what an experience! Growing up I used to go a lot in 1969. After teh great swoon in '69, somce credit teh Miracle Mets, i was really too painful to go to the friendly confines. I only went a handful of times during LTHS days. Yup I only remember part of the lineup: Battery: Fergie or Ken Holtzman with Randy Hundley catcher; Ron Santo 3rd), Don Kessinger (ss), Glen Becker (2nd), Mr Cub, Ernie Banks at 1st; Billy Williams (LF).   (6 - 4- 3 oe 5 - 4- 3 double play champs). Who rembers who were in Center and Right?
