Thurlow Thompson Weir, III

Thurlow Thompson Weir, III

Thurlow Thompson Weir III, was born Aug. 24, 1951, in San Francisco, Calif., the first child of Thurlow T. and Harriett Hixson Weir. The family temporarily settled in Torrance, Calif. for several years but made the anticipated move to Chico, Calif. in early 1955.

He died Oct. 19, 2006 at Sutter Roseville Medical Center from injuries received in a single car accident occurring on the evening of Oct. 15, 2006, several miles east of his home in El Dorado Hills, Calif. Organs and tissue donations were made to the California Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.

Thurlow attended Sierra View and Citrus Ave. Elementary Schools, Chico Junior High and was graduated from Chico High School in 1969. After serving in the United States Army in Germany during the early 1970s, he attended and graduated from California State University, Chico with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agronomy; supporting himself as an electrician. He spent several years in agriculture but returned to his original skill as an electrician and stayed in that field his remaining years.

He was an avid fisherman, loved backpacking throughout the Sierra Nevada Mountains and knew the John Muir Trail well. He enjoyed playing softball for many years in the CARD program. He was never able to play enough golf, but felt rewarded just to be on a course and to complete a round, rarely being upset if he should have a high score, which was not unusual. In later years he found four-wheeling interesting and at times challenging.

Thurlow was living in the Sacramento area when he married Michelle Landay in 1989. From that union a daughter, Jacklene June Weir, was born in 1990.

Other survivors include his father, Dr. Thurlow T. Weir Jr.; sisters, Kim and Melanie Weir; stepmother, Pat Weir and stepsisters, Carol Legg and Robin Machris. He is also survived by stepdaughter, Heather Landay and stepson Corp. Jeff Landay, United States Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by his mother, Harriett and brother, David Weir.

A celebration of his life will be held at his parents' home located at 4890 Tippitoe Lane in Forest Ranch, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, between the hours of 1-4 P.M. This will be a casual affair, mainly to reminisce about the details and events of his life. If help is required in locating this address please call (530) 342-3455 for directions. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to your favorite charity in Thurlow's name.

I remember Thurlow, though I didn't know him (or anyone else) well. I am a genealogist and I noticed his mother's maiden name in the obituary right away: Hixson. My paternal grandmother was a Hixson. I did some quick research and discovered that Thurlow and I are 4th cousins. Too bad I didn't know this back in our school days.

Wow Bill, that is so cool. Thurlow's dad was my Chico dentist for many years. Great men!
