Highest praise for Kay and her efforts to address a real stain on the United States.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Andi got to Rosebank also.?

Extra credit if you can ID the two young ladies in the foto.

Whats up with the right edge of the picture. Possibly my dog Ruby trying to eat my homework.

My experience with Vred  (and that of a couple of others) matches that of Beck & Map. John and I playted together on the Little League Yankees. I sent him the team photo, asked him to get in touch, provided several alternative means.

Like The Beatles sang "No Reply".

I've spoken with Bando a few times. He's just not too interested in the old days. We may get together some time.

There are others I've spoken to that have just moved on also.

Maybe it was that seasick photo that soured them on high school? But Longerbone is in the foto and he came to the re-union you say. Ah, but he attended the NA and  became an able bodied seaman

People are pointing out tha Elvis and Aretha both died on August 17

So I'll just note that Sam Cooke died on December 11 and Otis Redding (writer of RESPECT) on December 10 and Ike Turner December 12

Weirdest thing, Marvin Gaye who I met, played basketball with and watched record at his studio on Sunset Blvd.died on April Fools day 1984.

Now ain't that ...

Cher BTW is 72, but this isn't her. 1964 - any guesses?

Goldie Hawn! (I almost wanted to say "Twiggy"). Goldie and Kurt Russell's son played youth hockey (yup, Hockey Mom). I used to see them at Ice-o-Plex in Escondido when the rink hosted tournaments.

My younger son played for the Jr. Ducks in high school and at Montana State. The Jr. Ducks team was AAA and it was the year after the movie release. Great experience. Ryan still plays in the local adult leagues.

Goldie it is.

Funny thing, I was looking for Ice Skating during the heat wave. The only place operating seems to be in La Jolla.

Len Moore Skate Park  Less than one maile away. Right by the Park View Little League field (they only made it to the Regionals this year and there was a private investigaror hired to follow and photograph the kids because there were accustaions of rules violations).

Just llike in the Naked City there's a story here somewhere. Don Montell, MIA like Vred, Band, Parmely und Hamels, may hold the key.

They built this pipe up on Mulholland where I used to run a lot and sometimes drive. This particular location had some very interesting photo shoots done there

Bruce,

Theres "plenty" of sheets of ice in San Diego county.

UTC Center; Carlsbad Ice; San Diego Ice Arena (Mira Mesa); Krock Center Ice Arena (University Ave); The Rinks Poway Ice; Ice Plex Escondido (2 sheets) and of course the Sports Arena (Go Gulls smiley).

Interesting side story (only if you're a hockey fan). Canadian and US Hockey teams used to have names: Mini Mite (6 and Under), Mite (7-8), Squirt (9-10), Pee Wee (11-12), Bantam (13-14), Midget (15-18 , 3 tiers), Jouniors (19-21), College, Pro. They dropped all of the names a couple of years ago (PC?) and went to age group titles. It was always fun explaining to a noob that the group they were watching were AAA Midgets, when many of the players were over 6 ft. and 200+ lbs! Had 4 or 5 players from the Ducks team play professionally within 2 years!

Sorry for the "Hockey Hi-jack"

Jim

I must have misread the screen. I have great distance vision since the second cataract surgery, but am still adaptng to not being able to see cloxe. I must have 6 or 7 sets of readers. I need one magnification for newspaper reading and another for looking at computer screens.

Anyway, hockey_wise my cousins who grew up in Detroit with Aretha were players. They'd come to visit in California and tell me how it was the fastest game in the world. Then I'd have to tell them it was actually Jai Alai.

Terry Lee Maple

My youngest daughter Sally (the son I never had) was an all-around athlete and especially good at hockey. She started playing with the boys in a roller hockey league and helped them win a state championship when she was just a sophomore. After high school, she gravitated to ice hockey and played goalie for the Atlanta Lady Thrashers semi-pro travelling team. She was recruited by Harvard the year after their women's team won the Frozen Four. Sally was not home when the coach called. When I talked to her about Harvard's need for a goalie and an opportunity to fly up to visit the storied campus, she declined. "Too cold up there, dad," she said . . . "and I don't want to work that hard in college!" Instead, she enrolled at Presbyterian College, a small college in South Caroline, where she played lacrosse. Her true love was football. After lettering at McIntosh High School as a punter/place kicker on the boys team, she discovered women's semi-pro tackle football and played on several teams in Florida for a few years. She was good enough to play on the first national team that competed in Sweden for a world title. Sally wears a gigantic ring provided to all the young women who crushed their opponents on their way to an undefeated, unscored upon world title. The advance of opportunity for women athletes is the biggest story of my lifetime, and I am everlastingly grateful that I am the father of three daughters. For those of you who don't know this, the definition of a "feminist" is "a man with at least three daughters!"

But Terry, how was she at Jai Alaiwink

Getting back to Detroit and Aretha, here we have the Queen and Godfather of Soul, doing Please Please Please which was so very popular right around the time of high school.

Barbara McGrath and I went to see the James Brown show in 1966. Not a lot of white folks in the audience,

He did the whole routine. Excellent performance.

While this wasn't San Diego, it's pretty much what we saw. If you look closely you'll see that all the gettin' down on bended knee(s) was wearing holes in his trousers.

Drive In history here

There is also a Reader article detailing how Mayor Mo was instrumental in reducing the number of drive-ins from about 14 down to 2.

For some reason I'm having trouble accessing it.

Long shot here. Can anybody ID this theater. The daughter of one of the women shown is looking for it's whereabouts..

Her mom lived in CV on Fifth Avenue.  For a number of reasons the Seville, Vogue and theater in Coronado have been ruled out.

Seems to be from around 1945 or so.

The Hayloft has also been ruled out.

The booth looks pretty good, but the flooring in front doesn't seem to fit.

Village in Coronado has a booth, but for some reason it was vetoed. I'll have to go back and look.
