Jim Hawes

I guess everyone is busy with Christmas letters and posting Holiday Greetings on FaceBook! Meanwhile back in OB, I bet Santa Claus used to spend summers here! yes

Yes! Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. . . it's still fun with grandkids/nieces/nephews around. I hope Bruce is okay . . . maybe on a nice vacation with Michelle ;-D  Wishing all Lancers a wonderful 2019- with good health and lots of laughs along the way.

Thanks for hoping Kay!

I'd say Bruce is "sort of OK".

I know that's a bit cryptic, but I will return with a "public service" message on how to deal with doctors at a later time. We're all likely going to be seeing more of them than less. My journey started in 2000 with my thyroid "problem".

But just for oldtimes sake. Here's Borup 1957 Fifth grade Hilltop Drive Elementary.

Toni Watts is the only one I recognize.

Will add more as time goes by.

Thyroid disease is one of the most undiagnosed maladies which affect us. Worse still, it is often misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated (did I say "mistreated"). The thyroid system in effect drives almost every other system in the body. One analogy is that it is the accerator peddle, like on a car, but for your entire body.

If you have, or think you have, thyroid issues Elaine Moore has a very informative website that approaches the world from the patients side of things rather than researchers and doctors.

http://www.elaine-moore.com/

But here's some of the research.

Tom Hayes, Dick Holmes and Jim Longerbone reunited at Annapolis for the 50th Anniversary of their graduation from USNA  in 1968.  Navy's football team wasn't quite up to the task of winning the Homecoming  game, but Tom, Jim and I had a grand time catching up on family and all the going's on.

You look good fellas. I guess Jim is still doing top secret work, huh? (no visible ID)

Jim, me, Robert and Dave had all originally intended to go to the Air Force Academy to be close to some good skiing.

But you can't always get what you want, though Dave made it sort of.

David then joined The United States Air Force, serving his country honorably for two tours in Vietnam as part of a specialty Pararescue Team.

I am working on my medical mistreatment spiel, I will return.

In the meantime, here is my sister's fourth grade class with Mrs. Fuller who was also my fourth grade teacher.

I have fond memories of Mrs. Fuller.  She treated me well at a time when I could use it.

Dale Butterfield, Diane. Bobby Brown and Palmer Chase are the only faces I can put names with right now.

Must be a Banner in there.

Diane, bottom row second from viewer's right, was just beginning her long suffering life with type one diabetes.

Probably the worst disease in the world.

Sounds like "Nightmare on Elm Street", Bruce.HBO film "Bleed" is a more terrifying horror show and it sounds like you are living it.

I hope the New Year brings resolution for you and

JOY for all of us

Hi Shayne:

The spiel itself is rather short. The supporting evidence would take longer.

Don't believe naively that doctors necessarily have your best medical interests at heart or in practice. In addition, they often make mistakes.

Get second opinions and do your own research and challenge your doctors. If they don't respond, find a new one.

Interestingly, my new doctor graduated from high school in 1964 and knows Chula Vista well.

He found two major issues in one day.

Photo is 1978 Point Loma and thirty years later in good ol' CV. This is when some thyroid trouble began. I flipped from being hypothyroid (diagnosed in 2000) to hyperthoid in 2008. This caused some "problems" to say the least.

Hi Bruce,

I have a friend who sought 3 opinions, finally getting the right diagnosis. We have to be our own advocates when it comes to  health care.

Here's to a Wonder Full, Joy Full, Health Full 2019

Hi Shayne:

I can say that again so I will

"We have to be our own advocates when it comes to  health care."

to paraphrase one of my favorite advisors

"They got some hungry doctors there and they'll really make a mess outa you"

And your loved ones in the process

So some of us probably remember a bit about Junior High, right? I recall somebody on the playground having The "Toonerville Tess" "publication" below. I think they were called Tijuana Bibles. Rumor is that X tried to turn in a book report on it.

Anyway somebody wAs trying to sell these two for $115.00

Claimed they were worth $200 to $300

Didn't say why

A couple of Key Club rejects and Deux  Les belles filles du jour

Well it's not a dirge yet thankfully.

This hard-driving song features Gisela Farías's clarion voice and rural, declamatory singing style and the percussive sounds of zapateado footwork by Iván Fernández and his sister Lucero Fernández.

Giselas style is a bit harsh, declamatory to say the least, but it grows on you

Gisela reminds a bit of Anthropologist Laura Nader, my favorite prof at UCB, who did her field work in Mexico.

the zapateado footwork is my favorite part, and don't overlook the jawbone percussion, real jaw (@ :54 & 2:34)

Alzheimers video from TED

Stats about 1:42

I have been planning on living past 85, so these are disheartening numbers.

Don't forget though to do your own research.

I personally know two folks over 91. Neither seems to be affected by Alzheimers, though there are many causes of dementia.

YMMV

As far as I can tell, turmeric is still far and away the most likley course to follow for avoidance of Alzheimers at this point in time.

I going to check the latest research findings.

Think you’re too old to learn new tricks?! How about this amazing 99-year old grandma who just did her first indoor climb…

We have 99 year-old Aspenite Klaus Obermeyer who started the ski-wear  company, as our local inspiration. He yodels as he skiis and swims daily. His megawatt smile reflets his great attitude. My daughterr, River, and I teach at Rancho La Puerta, which was founded by a woman who is now 97 and is lucid and strong. We had the oldest Yoga teacher here at a Yoga Symposium, another 99 year old, who is also bright and energetic

Btw, read an article about the connection between diabetes and dementia. Inflammation seems to be at the root of most disease...

Shayne:

That is so wonderful  that all those near 100 year old folks are doing so well.

We  are back on daily turmeric after an inexplicable lapse.

Still the best bet I can find.

Reminder to self:

Hey Bruce

One study found that when even 2 g. (a good dose) of curcumin was ingested, serum levels stayed very low. However, when 20 mg. piperine was added to curcumin the bio-availability increased by 2000%!

When eaten with fat (virgin olive or coconut oil or meat drippings) as is done in India, curcumin can be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lymphatic system thereby partially bypassing the liver.

Bruce,

Thanks for posting the great health tips and information.  I'll now be switching to a curcumin supplement with even more bioperine than my current brand.  Shayne is correct that inflammation is a contributing factor to many health maladies.  Recently I noticed that my my A1C, C-Reactive Protein, and Homocysteine levels had risen slightly.  Still well within the normal range but higher than a few years back.  I did a very unscientific thing and added multiple supplements simultaneously that address various forms of inflammation and glucose reduction.  Within six weeks my A1C, CRP, and homocysteine levels all came down a few points.  I haven't had an abnormal glucose reading in months, even after excessive holiday meals, and many aches and pains have disappeared.  The only problem is that I don't know which of the supplements provided the most benefit or if it was the combination of them.  So I will continue on all of the supplements and try to avoid most prescription meds.

My late husband was a noninvasive cardiologist and saved the lives of many patients and prevented numerous  unnecessary invasive interventions and bypass surgeries.  However, physicians are trained to treat disease, illness, and injury.  They are not trained to treat wellness and most are unwilling to believe that supplements are very beneficial.  From my own experience and that of several friends, I believe they are mistaken in that regard.

Happy New Year!

We each take a daily Turmeric tablet.  We sprinkle Organic Ground Turmeric on chicken and turkey before cooking.

My A1C is normal but has risen the last few years.

I suggest taking a look at the amount of sugar there is in products.  For example an 8oz glass of low fat milk has 11g of sugar.  A slice of bread can have 6g of sugar.  Daily recommended max is 25g for women and 38g for men.
