Here's the Dee Gee Market which was on Broadway near E Street, where my older brother worked and learned to place bets at Caliente (side note: Bill Burger's step father worked at Caliente and we made one betting foray in Junior High School. As I recall we broke even).

Anyway, some things you don't see anymore: not one but two telephone booths and "Orange Stamps" (that may be Carolyn Coates exiting the background booth). Beyond Carolyn you can (not too plainly) see an ad for Old Colony Paints.

Did anybody else  "flip" coins in the old telephones to get a free call? The idea was to accelerate the coin through the mechanism, triggering it yet returning the coin. Some fools actually coated dimes with mercury to get a free call. Not too wise to be walking around with a pocket full of mercury to save $.10 though. Come to think of it, where did the mercury come from? Probably broken thermometers?

You can pick this up on eBay for $4.50

Copy of email sent to Cheryl Cox. Let's see how the wheels of government are turning these days.

Hi Cheryl:

I'm writing to get your assistance in righting a situation that I have discovered.

Wayne Humphries (graduate of Hilltop High School, class of 1962) was killed in action in Viet Nam, but his name does not appear on the memorial in the Park.

Perhaps, you can get this rectified.

Michele lived in both Hawaii and Japan. Today, I had on my beach shorts and she told me I looked like a little kanak. I had to look it up (they didn't have them in CV as nearly as I can tell)

Hi Rosie!

Thank you!  Thank you! I have a little something (not a costume) in La Crescenta that may make you smile.  We are going up there this evening, so i'll take a photo and post it when we get back to chula vista...:)

The car belongs to the neighbor at the house in Los Angeles...he was parking it in Bruce's garage in return for keeping an eye on the house while we are not there... Bruce has been talking about buying it (he is not really sure he needs additional things to think about), and is also waiting until the price is right...it's NICE, isn't it!

All this talk of dancing makes me think it may be gettin' near "Twine Time". Or maybe slang time. There was an awful lot of it.

Do you remember when you first heard of the "blind munchies". I do. From the mouth of Mike Hollister at Main Beach, Coronado, 1963. The reference point in those days was clearly drug-related, but it got so common in usage that my mom even had it in her lexicon.

The old paint ad got me to thinking. There are a ton of vintage ads out there slowly dying off

Not CV.

Patty:

we visited my mom and dad last night and my mom was so excited when I mentioned your name!  She said that her boss had his kids enrolled in your school in el cajon a few years back.  She added that he (her boss) had nothing to say but wonderful things about the school and you!

Can you tell that Bruce is just dying to get out there and bust some moves on the dance floor???  :)

Note the black ribbon on the flag.  I don't remember that particular assembly, but it had to have been within 30 days of President Kennedy's assassination because those of us who were in "S" club went from classroom to classroom to remove the black ribbons from the flag at the end of the thirty days.  And, yes, Carolyn does look a little photoshopped.  Perfect head shot of you, Bea.  I can see half of my head and could name at least a couple dozen or more.  Where's Johnny (never thought of him as John) Hamel these days?

Good eyes and memory Gail. I have no news of Hamels. Did he come to any reunion? He was in the Key club, maybe I'll track him down and make him tell me the name of that surf movie.

I may start the tracking task, I'm not sure. It would be a spreadsheet containing colums for reunions attended, last known address etc. I'm not sure whether I want to do it and even whether it should be done. Some folks might find it intrusive and I would have to agree with them.

Did I put up the photo of the boys fishing with Dave S.? - mostly a note to me.

I appreciate everyones input and memories.  I wrote in the beginning and finally added pictures today. The "now" pic was from my trip to Paris this past April with longtime friend and classmate Kathleen (Kate) Gorow Lauren. (see master photo in profile)  We had a great 2 weeks exploring all areas of Paris and Aix en Provence.  So many good stories of the gracious Parisans helping out two tourists in need of directions! They were so helpful.

I look forward to seeing everyone this Sept. Kate and I will be there Friday night and Sat. night.

I heard back from Cheryl Cox quickly. She's checking into Wayne Humphries today. It could be that the memorial contains names of people born in CV only.

I was playing with .GIF files a while back. It's conceivable that all the photos folks post up here could be merged into a big master file (with nice smoooooth transitions). I don't think we'd win at Cannes though.

It's rather annoying, no?

Here's a gentler transition. Anyone recognize the houses?

A couple more pictures from the past.  This is my brother Mike's woodie that he had from 1961 - 1964.  He painted it a bright yellow.  He was the nicest brother ever and let me tag along surfing with him everywhere.  Notice in the background there were still the fields which extended from our house to Rosebank School and beyond.  E Street didn't go through yet to Bonita, and we lived at the "dead end" of E Street.  Gail Dillion and Stan Kromydis lived down the hill a couple of houses away.

The next picture is Shayne Schuller, me, Frank Fernandez, and I think Hal Humphries (can anyone identify?).  We are at the O'Day home in around 1966 -- maybe Christmastime.  I was a student at San Jose State, which was a great time to be in the SF area.  Went to concerts at the Fillmore in SF and saw Allen Ginsberg and Timothy Leary.  The Jefferson Airplane, a new rock group, gave a free concert at SJS.  Both Tommie Smith and John Carlos competed in track for SJS.  Also our fantastic Lancer swimmer Mark Parmely was swimming for Stanford in water polo.  I attended a couple of his meets.

Nice pics Rosie. I don't recall ever seeing Hal without glasses, but that very well could be him in the photo.  Wayne Humphries fate re The Memorial has now "gone to committee".

The 1940 Ford Woodie has always been my favorite. There was one parked in the parking structure in Century City when I worked there. It was way expensive even way back then. Looked just like this one.

John Axsom, who lived over there by you (class of '62) did a very nice video on cars, but he has taken down his website. I downloaded it at some point and I think George did too. Maybe I can prevail on John to put it back up.

Another time, another place.

Speaking of the family dog. Check out the T-shirt. The little dog, Rowdy, was starting to go blind from Yorkie encephalitis. One of the very few known cases in the world at the time. Some luck, huh!

I never knew you attended San Jose State, Rosie. I was nearby at UOP in Stockton, We played SJS in baseball as we were members of the WCAC at the time. Those were indeed interesting times. John Vredenburgh came up to see me (he was at USC) once and we drove into San Francisco to attend a Byrds concert at the Fillmore. We were thinking about going to grad school at San Francsico State but neither one of us did it. The bay area was a big draw in those days. I recall that SF State recruited Frank to play football. You may be able to confirm that. That's a great photo of him. When I was a freshman, Chico State came to Stockton to play us. It was fun to discover that Joe Stetser was on the team so we had a brief Hilltop moment. I am in constant contact with Joe as he loves to send out political e-mail messages to his conservative network. A few of the local athletic icons that surfaced in northern California while I was there; I met Bob Spence (St. Augustine) when we played a freshman basketball game at Santa Clara. He had been recruited to their outstanding basketball program; Bob Boone (Hall of Fame catcher with the Phillies and former Crawford athlete) played third base on the Stanford team we played each year. Although we beat Cal, we never beat Stanford during my window of opportunity; Crawford's Larry Blum ended up playing basketball for USF. After my happy formative years in Chula Vista, I really enjoyed my college and graduate years in northern California.

Fast Talking Times at Hilltop High (I guess). I spent a lot of time hanging out with Fred Workman and yes I would like to have seen him on a surfboard. Any photos Rosie?

Truth be told, high school is not one of my favorite eras. Berkeley in the late Sixties was a very interesting time, though I spent a ton of make-up time studying, I did get around a bit. Some highlights:

Grateful Dead - Greek Theatre Berkeley

Jimi Hendrix - Berkeley Communithy Theatre

Cream - The (Original) Fillmore

The Band - (inaugural concert as The Band) at Winterland

People's Park (one block down from where I lived at Dwight and College)

The Panhandle, Longshorman's Hall, Mt. Tam, Stinson Beach, Cafe Trieste, City Lights

However, my favorite is the 7 (seven) years I spent in graduate school at UCI, living in Laguna & Newport Beach. Ran into some very smart and/or interesting folks there. John Seeley Brown, computer scientist, who went on to become Director of Xerox PARC, Gary Lynch, neurobiologist whose name gets mentioned as a possible Nobel Prize candidate, Carlos Castaneda, author and wannabe brujo. For a long time there were almost none or heavily obscured photos of Carlos available.

Hubert Lindsey was fixture in Berkeley in the sixties. I couldn't find video from then, but he didn't change much in twenty years (Bowling Green, 1987)

I always liked his line "bless your wicked little hearts, sinners"

Dairywise, if this is the one on North Forth, then I think we have determined that it was first Cloyde's then Golden Arrow.

As long was we're on cows and such

Forgot about this one. I had thought that Golden Arrow was strictly local, but this is from Seattle, Washington 1935.

These photos are from the ninth grade Costume Day at Hilltop Junior High  March 1961.  I just thought it might be fun to see if you can recognize anyone in the pictures.  It was such a fun day, and everyone had such a good time!

Attention Classmates!!

We are fast approaching the maximum capacity for Saturday's event at the San Diego Country Club, so if you are planning on attending, you need to get in your money and registration ASAP to reserve your spot. There is no maximum number for the Friday night mixer.

Hilltop already has almost 100 attendees.   The response has been tremendous (which is great), but we hope that all who wish to attend will be accommodated.

Great photos Bev:

I got everybody but the first two, who seem to be in disguise, and Lanette's chimp. I would guess that the shorter of the first two lived in Bonita.

Rosie:

Similar incident. At Hilltop Drive Elementary I was standing behind the hitter and was too close so that when the bat was cocked back I got hit right in the mouth. I can't remember who the hitter was and really not much of anything about the accident except being sent home for the day. We didn't go to the doctor much in the old days.

BTW, our family doctors were Heywood and Averill (sp).

Bruce, that is Jacquie Connoley and me as Purple People Eaters...nice.  Too bad it wasn't a color photo, we were colorful with purple and chartreuse antennas.   If I am thinking correctly we won the day.   Always wonder what happen to the Zakarian's...does anyone know?  Very nice girls and had a great house over there on 1st and L (I believe), lots of nooks and grannies.  Gotta love Walt and Lanette.

John, Dick, Gail, & Patty -- here is the bill from Mr. Benjamin's Junior Cotillion. I can't believe the stuff I kept!  I was in the 6th grade.  I remember the formal dances we had -- pure torture for me.  All the girls lined up on the wall and waited for someone to ask them to dance.  I don't remember getting asked very much.
