Mike was one of the three College Hill guys who were together from Kindergarten thru High School. For me,h e was the "middle guy" between Skip and Mac as far as being a close friend. Mike was the kind of guy who seemed to treat everyone as one of his good friends. I was envious because he was a good athlete and I was not, and he was very popular , especially with my old Clifton classmate(Gwyn Fleming). There were quite a few "popular" guys in our class , but I remember Mike as being on of the most genuine of them all.

I have carried a huge sense of guilt in my life because I attended the Naval Academy and was supposed to be the "professional" soldier. People like Mike, Skip and Mac were college guys who signed up and lost their lives. I, on the other had went back and forth to Viet Nam as a navigator in a C130 cargo plane and survived the war. Doesn't seem fair.

Attending our 40th Reunion, working to promote the Memorial as well as getting to know Mrs. Tuttle and working closely with Gwyn on our paint projects at WHHS has given me a real sense of peace about my survival and their losses. Not sure why, but healing takes place in many unforseen ways.

Having Gwyn's Mother and Mike's Brother and Sister at the Memorial Dedication  again makes me give thanks that they could be there for a public acknowledgement of Mike's sacrifice and that his memory will live on.

The way that I now feel that I know Mike is by observing the many ways that Gwyn has honored his memory in the way she has lived her life .

Hi Mike: I know you're not here, but I know you're up there, somewhere. After all these years please  know, I have remembered you , Mac and Nick every Veteran's Day and Memorial Day since 1969. I can still see your grin when we were 16 together and at reserve football. You went on to college and became a Phi Gam and I did too, at Sewanee. We both did our military service, up front and without hesitation. You will always be greatly respected for that. I didn't know you "bought it" or were even over there while on my first Navy tour in Newfoundland. On my next tour, I requested a Destroyer going to Vietnam to make difference. Hopefully one of our 5" rounds in 1968-69 got the one that got you, earlier. We pumped 6,660 rounds into the VC from the Mekong Delta all the way to Chu Lai in 9 months.  I sincerely thank you for your unselfish service and will never forget. Perge'
