NEWPORT NEWS - Margo Ann MacPherson Nevins, 68, of Newport News, Va., and Mt. Crested Butte, Colo., died peacefully on Sept. 16, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., after a three week battle with an acute illness.
Margo was preceded in death by her parents, Patricia Vockell MacPherson and Malcolm Douglas MacPherson; and her older brother, Douglas Malcolm MacPherson.
She is survived by her husband, Kerry Francis Nevins; her children, Noelle Nevins Henderson (Doug) of Darien, Conn., Kerry Christopher Nevins (Lisa) of Great Falls, Va., and Ashley Elizabeth Nevins (Ilene) of Odessa, Fla. She leaves five grandchildren, Hadley, Campbell and Piper Henderson and Lindsay and Chase Nevins. She is also survived by her younger brother, Donald William MacPherson (Barbara) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and San Diego, Calif., and their sons, Scott, Nathan and Ryan, and her niece, Lisa MacPherson Campbell of Louisville, Ky.
Margo was born on April 24, 1943. She lost her father at age four. It was necessary that she attend boarding school and summer camp in between school years from age five until age 11. She attended public school in Greenwich, Conn., at age 12 and 13, then Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Margo obtained her R.N. degree in 1965 from Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich, Conn., where she was a Pediatric nurse, then an Operating Room nurse. Later she was on the Open Heart Operating Room Team at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, N.Y.
She met medical student Kerry Nevins and ten months later they married on July 29, 1967. Her life was devoted to family. She raised three wonderful children and has five grandchildren. She loved gardening and was a member of the Hampton Roads Garden Club and served on the St Andrews Flower Guild. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed serving at the Fifty-niners Luncheons at St Andrews Church, and in the past, cooking for the homeless at St Augustine Church in Newport News. She was a member of the Hampton Roads Junior League, and the James River Country Club. Generous to a fault, she repeatedly opened her home to French exchange students (three summers), to a student from Costa Rica, and a Vietnamese family being relocated to Newport News by St Andrews Church.
Margo loved sailing and being on the water. She and husband, Kerry, spent many weeks sailing in the Virgin Islands and St. Martin. For 30 years she enjoyed boating, the Chesapeake Bay, and especially her friends and good times at York River Yacht Haven Marina. She was an avid snow skier and mountain hiker and happiest in her vacation retreat at 9,400 feet in Mt. Crested Butte, Colo. She was active in the Butte Beauties, a group of women who get together regularly for skiing, hiking, rafting, camping and fellowship. She could not walk down the street in Crested Butte without half a dozen people saying hello. Everybody loved Margo.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at
