Tom lived kitty-corner behind my house, so he was a close neighbor as well as friend. His death was a terrible shock. I think of him to this day. His life had extraordinary promise. He was a kind, warm, and up-beat person, with a gentle sense of humor and wit which never came at another's expense. I remember Freshman algebra class, when Tom, Peter Erblich, and I listened in horror and awe to Bob Kerr's story of his father drop-kicking the family television set into the Mississippi River. I hated math but loved those classmates! I remember Tom riding his bike, playing tennis, and being a wonderful, trustworthy friend. His heart was so big and so kind, and it was a terrible tragedy when it just gave out suddenly one evening.
