I met Hyoung in Ms. Schroeder's first grade class at Maryland Elementary School. He was a rambunctious boy, whose initial lack of English and cultural difference never held him back from making friends. Hyoung loved Meg Murray's pigtails, which always were tied with yarn bows in CHS colors (since her dad was a basketball coach). Hyoung called her "Puppy dog in orange and blue!" It was sad when he moved back to Korea, but twice as joyful when he returned to Clayton in high school. By that time, his English was fluent, and he knew all the in's and out's of American teenage life. He made a ton of friends, and he had a mischievious yet kind sense of humor. I remember him going up to a girl's locker, striking a flirtatious pose, and asking a girl if she wanted a kiss. She was startled and taken aback until Hyoung pulled a Hershey's kiss, and then everyone laughed. I also remember him helping to decorate a homecoming float. Seeing Hyoung always made me smile and feel happy. His tragic death was heart-breaking.

Hyoung was on the CHS wrestling team with me in 1977. We both wrestled in the 118 pound class that year. He was my practice partner and friend. One drill we often ran was the "wheelbarrow race". That boy could "run" as fast with his arms as I could with my feet. I have fond memories of Hyoung.
