I didn't know Stan Gerow, and I'm sorry to hear about him (his is a horrible story).
I'd like to know how some of the other people from our class died.

Stan also went to Roxboro Elementary with me. He was married to a childhood friend of mine too.

Yes, it was really a tragedy. He took the boat out for one last run before he was selling it.

Hi everyone,

I JUST found this section of the website. It took FOREVER to catch up on everyone's posts. It's great to see posts from some of my old pals. I have absolutely no recollection of the senior assembly but do remember the dinner (I think I have the program somewhere).

I moved to University Hts. in 8th grade so Wiley was my first CHUH school. I had Mr. Clean (I think Mr. Hall?) for homeroom and remember lots of those teachers. I think Mr. Quinn (civics) and one of the other teachers got married. That was a big deal then.

At Hts. I was in band and marching band - Mr. Kaarlo Mackey - definitely would have been brought up on child abuse charges today. He was famous for throwing music stands, particularly at clarinet players who squeaked (thank goodness I played flute). I remember we played at his funeral. Homeroom was a young-ish male biology teacher in a room overlooking the courtyard, I think. I loved Mrs. Bernard (I think I saw that she died recently) and Mrs. Rabinsky.

Thanks to the reunion committee for an INCREDIBLE job with planning and this website. I'll be checking back often. And look forward to seeing lots of you in October.

I have lots of space at my house in Orlando where it is 77 degrees today!!!!!

Debbie

I also remember when Mr. Mackey died. He had requested that the Chamber Choir sing at his funeral. I was in the group. It's one of the oddest recollections I have of high school. It was a cold and rainy day, as I recall. We "flanked" his hearse (wearing our black choir robes) on the drive into the cemetary and sang at the burial site. Then we all went to a wake at the church hall. Does anyone else remember that? It was like a HUGE party...actually festive. I never was in the band or orchestra but I always thought that the guy was talented but VERY tempermental.

Debbie...

Nice to see you here. I was also in the band and marching band. Remember how Mr. Mackey used to call any girl who came into the band room from the principal's office "Fifi?" The girl would stand there with a message for someone and he would stop rehearsal and in an irritated voice say "What do you want, Fifi?" It was pretty funny.

I also played at his funeral. It was a rather surreal experience. I don't remember the wake afterwards though.

Louie, say hello to Ralph for me.Do you know what he's
doing these days?

Mr. Mackey sure brings back some memories for me. I played clarinet in the band & he was always in our faces
about our playing. The most intense teacher I ever had.
His famous phrase to our section was "STOP THAT SQUAWKING!" Many times accompanied by spittle in the face.

Gerald...I'll try to get Henry to sign on.

Hi Bill and Debbie..

I also remember playing at Mr. Mackey's funeral. I was hanging out with the other tuba players, and, in retrospect, we were pretty disrespectful. But, Mr. Mackey was pretty inappropriate most of the time, although I agree he was a talented musician. Rmember the guy they had replace him during our junior year. Bernie Spisak or Spivak or something like that. I really felt sorry for him. We really treated him poorly.

I also have a vague memory of the "wake" after the funeral, although I don't remember it as being that festive.

Good old Karlo T. Mackey. He made me play contra base clarinet for a while. It was almost as tall as I was. I too remember playing at his funeral. I think that was the first funeral (or Wake) I was ever at. His claim to fame, to my recollection was a quote similar to this:
“BOY, BOY, I told you how I wanted you to play that, DO YOU UNDERSTAND, BOY, BOY”, in his booming voice. I think we (I) were scared of him, but he was a good musician.

OK. you band folks. Does anyone remember Danny Epstein? He was class of 1968 I believe and was one of the most talented flute players to go through Heights. I've always wondered what happened to him. I remember his flute playing, however, and he was so very talented.

Sheryl Winer (Lessens)

First comment; HELLO DEBBIE DORSKY! Glad to have you aboard! Write me a private note and we can start a real communication! About band directors who should have been reported for child abuse, we had one in our high school here, who just quit about eight years ago on a psych disability. My daughter would tell stories about him throwing batons into the band every day, and my husband treated numerous high school students for ulcers from him. I guess it goes with being artistic!
Speaking of funerals of teachers, I remember my first semester in Jan. of soph. year where I finally made it into Polly Blumenthal's AP English class. She died of leukemia a few weeks into the second semester of that year. Really gave me the creeps!
As for all the Boulevard people, where are you?? I have such memories of Mrs. Blum and Miss Bryan, both my third grade teachers, of Mrs. Griffin in fourth, Miss Walsh in fifth, and Mrs. Coates in sixth. Anyone else out there have stories to share?

I don't think Danny would remember me...but if you ever see him, please pass my best wishes to him. He was such a talented flute player. My guess is that he is a wonderful doctor. He is one of those folks from Heights who I didn't know really well...but really admired and liked nonetheless.

Is anyone else here having trouble sending messages directly to classmates today? I can't seem to do so...I get an error message.

Hello All-

Debbie-Mrs. Bernard was my homeroom teacher although never my chemistry teacher. She was THE nicest! She loved us and I never really knew she was Jewish and/or only taught for the pure joy of it until I saw she had died in the Jewish News in I think, 2008. She worked because she wanted to-didn't have to.

Sheryl
I remember being very fond of Mrs. Blumenthal:
One of my "best-ever" papers was an assignment from her where we had to copy Mark Twain's writing style.
She complained to our class that the women who sat in front of her were rudely polishing their nails during High Holy Day services. Her lecture that day made such an impression on me that a few years ago I wrote in our synagogue bulletin about her complaints and how she died several months later of leukemia.
I assumed for many years that she probably already knew in the fall that she was terminal and those were her last High Holy Days. Now, I think it was unlikely that she had so much warning.

Shelley, they've been doing some updates on the class creator site itself and you are right, it is screwing with everyone's emails to each other, I've been getting bounceback emails all week that belong to other people. I'm sure they'll iron out their problems with the site soon. Seems like they should have left it alone to begin with, it was working perfectly...

01/29/09 07:52 AM #356

Sue Bruder (Wold)

To Val
The bounceback emails i think are only going to the administrators.
TO ANYONE WHO ARE HAVING PROBLEMS PLEASE LET JIM OR MYSELF KNOW SO WE CAN PASS IT ONTO THE CLASS CREATOR WEBSITE

I feel so out of the loop.......I was not in choir nor the band because I am musically challenged. I didn't even recognize myself in my 6th grade picture...but I went to school with the infamous Gary Bryan!
