I am sure most of you are aware of the situation in Israel, the war on terror is a battle in which we must win. The brave soldiers of the IDF are doing a wonderful job in spite of difficult conditions(terrorists hiding amoung the civilian population and hiding in hospitals). today our daughter attented two funerals of soldiers from her unit Golani 13 who were killed in battle. all we ask is that everyone put the state of Israel and its soldiers in your prayers.

Kenny:

Thanks for your "post", I could not agree more. I also hope we will all make it our responsibility to know the facts: Such as Israel NOT being the agressor, but defending itself from the 6,400+ rockets that have fallen on Israel in the last 3 years (200 the day before Israel responded) and to make our friends aware of those facts. The media is not our friend.

I am so thankful for all the wonderful e-mails and commentary by my fellow classmates. We have all learned about the difficulties in life but here in the states we live in relative quiet(some excetions-9/11 i.e.) in Israel they live with constant threats, therfore it is our duty to speak and educate others about how we as Jews want to live in peace!actually we in Israel now say we want to live with QUIET!! thanks again for your thoughts and kind words.

My prayers are with your daughter and other IDF soldiers to bring peace back to Israel. I do have relatives in Jerusalem whose sons are in the Army and probably in the vacinity of Gaza. We hope for the best for all of Israel.

Mitch...

I think Rupert was Monticello. Paul Wisely was Asst. Principal. Eugene Myslenski (sp?) was overall Principal at Heights. We were Unit A I think, but I can't remember the unit principal.

Kenny and Yael,
I, too, pray for your daughter and the other brave soldiers of the IDF.
I have been very sorry to learn about the deaths of the soldiers in the past couple of days. Last summer, I camp-nursed at North Carolina's Camp Judaea where about 35 of our staff members were Israeli Scouts, and pre- and post-IDF Israelis. Also, each of the past several years, we've housed and gotten to know performing Israeli Scouts (17 year/olds) when they've come through town. I am terrified that I'm going to read the name of someone who I have lived with on Haaretz.com.
Meanwhile, last Friday, my 21 year/old son returned from studying for a few weeks with Aish in Jerusalem. My 18 year/old son just left Wilmington this evening for his Birthright trip. His flight to Tel Aviv leaves tomorrow. These are not opportunities and schedules that our sons asked our advice about. And, if they had asked our advice, I am not sure how I would have responded.

Anne after going back and forth to Israel for over 20 years let me assure you it is a very safe place for your children to visit. not only my 4 daughters but my sister-in-law Rachael(1969)has lived there over 30 years. think about it what place is safe anymore? the world changed a whole lot over the past 40 years and people like us have instilled in our children wonderful values! Yael and I appreciate your thoughts and concerns and keep on doing the wonderful things that you do. kenny

Terri...

After I posted the comment about us being Unit A I had second thoughts 'cause it didn't feel right, but I couldn't remember if it was A, B or C. Thanks for clearing it up. I had no clue that Rupert was the unit principal.

Were we all unit B?...who was the former PE teacher guidance counselor? She should have stuck with teaching PE. She wasn't much for guidance, and she wasn't a particularly strong student advocate. When I boldly asked to be transferred out of Miss Hunting's Algebra 2 class because I had her for geometry and learned nothing...she replied "you will meet a lot of people you don't like in life". My answer..great..then withdraw me from the class. I would have majored in math if I hadn't had that trainwreck for a math teacher twice! OK...off of my soapbox.

Anyone around who was in my English class senior year when we were studying the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner? The discussion turned to the symbolism around the albatross around the mariner's neck. Some "wise" soul in my class asked the poor student teacher, who we actually liked, how that could be? She looked puzzled, and the student said "an albatross has a 18 foot wingspan". Oh my.

We all had teachers we hate... My 8 grade science teacher was really a trip... I got an c on my insect collection which my brother got from her girlfriend in shaker...(she got an a)... The next year with a different teacher a friend got an A with the same collection....I love science until I had him.... Did not take it in 9 grade because of him.....
(did anyone have Miss Richards in 2 grade??? at Taylor)

Does anyone else remember reading the Greek play "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes in Miss Leffert's Honors English class senior year? The play is about the women of Greece making a pact to refuse to have sex with their husbands until they agree to a peace treaty that ends the Peloponnesian War. Lots of imagery of sex-starved warriors walking around with erections and such. Since Miss Leffert (she of the pink Mustang fame) made us read the play aloud there were lots of red faces and giggling going on during the week we read this. This was pretty racy stuff for 1969, not to mention the obvious anti-war message when the Vietnam War was in the news all the time. I can't imagine that no parents complained about it. I don't think today's HS English teachers could get away with it.

OK, seems that no one can remember such important trivia as being in Unit B! I do know that Mr. Wisely was principal of our unit, and the female counselors were Dr. Bell and good ol' Miss Smith. I also am pretty sure Myslenski followed us from Roosevelt to Heights, but I'm not sure exactly when. We also had Mr. Rupert, but was that in Roosevelt, or as unit B principal? It amazes me how many people we went thru! I still want to hear from someone in my homeroom in high school. 'cuz I have no idea who the guy was who I had for three years!

01/07/09 01:53 PM #173

Shelley Hornik (Lloyd)

Ah that's it...Dr. Bell...wasn't she the former PE teacher? She was a jerk. I agree....Myslenski followed us from Roosevelt to Heights.

I also want to hear from someone in MY homeroom...faced the courtyard...Old white haired man...hated us. I think he even told us he couldn't wait for us to leave. I suppose I COULD dig out my yearbook...bet he's in there.

I was in your homeroom and we had Mr Sulc. At my age the memory comes in spurts......if I get lucky and remember anything else, I will add it later

OK...brain is working overtime...day off of work because of ice. Was there a Mr. Hines or Heintz or something like that at Heights? I think HE was my homeroom teacher.

01/07/09 02:12 PM #176

Steven A. Fox

Hines was the drama teacher...
The homeroom I was in changed in my senior year to the science wing....(or was it the other way around :)
I do remember our homeroom teacher telling us off for not having him at our homeroom dinner....

Bonnie,

Mr. Sulc was in Roosevelt. I later found out from a guy I dated from Hebrew Academy that he went to teach there every day after working at Roosevelt. He was well liked there, too.
We had two ice days this week, Mon. and Tues. I think we may have run out of snowdays already, meaning kids will go to school later in June. (I'm smirking, being retired!) We have a new exchange student with us now, from Thailand. We took him because the home he was in couldn't put up with him anymore, and I have no excuse, with lots of time and room. It sure is hard entertaining him when he won't talk to me! (Yes, he understands everything, will answer questions.) Anyone offering suggestions?? It's been a long two and a half weeks off school!

That is a really long time to live with someone who doesn't talk to you and the weather is so bad that you can't run away from home.

I really liked Mr. Sulc, but can't remember what he taught.
