Herwig's on Palisade Ave.

Okay, this has been haunting me...

In Jr. High, at #4, we used to run down Lawton Ave as soon as the lunch bell rang, to get to the deli just up from the corner on Palisade Ave.

They made the best monster roast beef hero (sub) sandwiches (with extra mayo) that we could afford.

Then, as soon as we had 'em in our dirty little hands (who washed?), we high-tailed it up the street to eat at the soda fountain at Herwig's. They had the best real root beer in frosty mugs.

You had to run, because you didn't have much time, and if you got there too late, you waited for your sandwich to be made, and couldn't get a seat at the counter at Herwig's.

Even if you got an early seat, Joe Adami would push you off your stool when he got there anyway, so it was best to be almost finished by then.

Probably part of The 1001 Reasons That I Moved to California.

There, got that off my chest. I can sleep tonight.
