Catherine Johnson (Gallegos)

Catherine Gallegos After a defiant battle with leukemia, Catherine Gallegos died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends on December 4, 2007. Catherine was born on October 5, 1945 to Carl and Alma Johnson. Reared in Fresno, California, she received her BA and her Masters Degree in English from Fresno State University. She began her teaching career by teaching English in Ethopia for the Peace Corps. After her return from the Peace Corps she taught high school English for ten years in Fresno County. Catherine continued her career as a middle school vice principal for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District, then as a middle school principal for Cambrian Union School District. In 1986, Catherine returned to the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District where she served as a district level administrator before becoming Superintendent of Washington Union School District in Monterey County. Catherine served in this capacity for nine years until retiring in June 2006.Through her dedication to public education, she truly influenced the lives of thousands Catherine is survived by her sister, Diana Lovelady, brother and sister-in-law Robert & Kathryn Johnson, husband Ed Gallegos, and many nieces, nephews grand nieces & grand nephews. She will be greatly missed by her many friends for her intelligence, humor, grace and elegance. Services will be held at St Josephs Catholic Church , 435 Monterey Avenue, Capitola ,CA on Friday, December 7, at 1:00 PM with a reception following the services. In lieu of flowers, Catherine requested donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10605.
