I was sorry to read about the passing of Steve Ritz - we roomed together for a while. Anybody know any details of his death?

Doc, great idea with this webpage and the 40 year reunion. I was happy to see all those great photos from 1970 but was equally saddened by the passing of Steve, Roger and Ron. I hope the reunion comes together in 2010 at the AFA.

NOTE from Doc: We will be joining the Class of 74's 35th reunion 7-10 Oct 2009. See Home Page and 40th Reunion Page for details.

Has anyone heard from Randy Shockley in awhile? He visited me in Albuquerque several years ago but I have lost track of him. We were PS roomos.

I would like to have some separate events for the Prep School Reunion even though I graduated with '74. It is a completely different set of memories that only Prepies can relate to and the friends we made. Everyone can purchase football tickets by going to the USAFA website and ordering on-line. One of the major reasons for me to attend the USAFA reunion is the fact that there is a Prep reunion. Maybe some of you feel the same way.

Thought I was going to be able to make the reunion this coming weekend but some business came up I cannot miss. Wish I had found this site much earlier. It has been great reconnecting with a lot of the guys.

I really think we should try and follow this up with a real Prep School reunion next year. Or if someone has an idea for just some get together anywhere in the U.S. I would welcome anyone to Austin, Texas.

Any "C" Squadron members up for it? I think we can spend the next few months chasing down all the missing people on the list.

Have fun this weekend and beat TCU.

Mike -- sorry you could't make it. We had a great time despite the freezing weather at the game and the loss to TCU. We'll see if there's interest in getting together next year -- before we're all drawing Social Security! -Doc

It was terrific seeing everyone last weekend and my wife learned a lot more about me (for better or worse) while listening to all the stories.

Does anyone have a squadron roster for A B and C? Also, did we keep the same roommate all year or did we switch? I remember rooming with Lance Webb, but I cannot remember whether it was at the Prep School or at the Zoo my Doolie year. Damn, I am getting senile I suppose. Who else did I live with?

Anyone who took group photos, start posting them because I would love to have a copy. I will do the same.

Next reunion, I think it would be great to eat with the Cadet Candidates and spend some more time with them.

I am sorry that I was not able to attend. My niece was getting married in California on the same weekend.

It is great to see some of the new posted pictures. If I find some old photos, I will post them.

Best Regards,

MUCHO kudos to Doc for setting up the reunion and web-site! What a bang-up job.
The only reason I went to the USAFA reunion was for the 40th Prep-school portion. Announced though the web-site. And Doc delivered on both.
The meeting with the O-6 in charge of the Prep School was enlightening. Col. Black he wasn't. I wonder what we can do to continue to motivate the future generation of preppies.
The web-site put me in contact with folks that the brain cells lost. Thanks for the re-newed contacts!
But, I personally feel bad that the Zoomie grads did not accept the non-grads better during the reunion. For some reason, they lost the concept that without the prep-schoolers, the SOB's probably would not have made it past the Doolie year....much cursing and mashing of teeth follows!!!
THANKS AGAIN DOC.
P.S. I still don't think I bought you a drink for setting both the reunion and web-site up. But you'll have to come to Florida to collect! Like the Prep-school, the doors open anytime and to all.

Thanks to Bill Rodgers I am now aware of this site and thanks Doc for setting it up! If I would have known prior to the reunion, I would have been there since I now live in the Denver area. Many fantastic memories from our days at the Prep School. Anyone remember me getting pulled from finals to be read my rights and accused of treason? That was crazy!! I said a little prayer today for our lost classmates. Breaks my heart for their loved ones left behind. Ron Watson entertained us endlessly during the day. Does anyone know how he died?

I pray that you are all healthy today and would love to reminisce some time. Funny, was just looking at my yearbook just about 2-3 weeks ago!

Although I left before Chistmas of my freshman year, I am very proud of those of you who went the distance. My only regret is that I did not continue with my pilot dream. Flew back seat T33 from Minot to Great Falls for the retirement parade for a general. Got vertigo and thought that I was gonna crash! What a great moment though.

Looking forward to renewing old friendships!

Thanks for updating us all Michael. I had not realized you left before Christmas that first year. In my mind, you were one of the guys who would make it all the way - you and Ned Schoeck - seemed to have it all together.

I for one would love to be refreshed on the details of your "treason" charge by Col. Black and the interview by General Olds. That sounds like a great story and one that cannot wait until the next reunion.

The second of the series is in the Dec09 Checkpoints...More later.
Happy New Years to all!

Looking at the reunion pictures brings back memories. I wish I could have been there to harass Tom Richardson!
Steve Moran sent me some pictures and he and his wife came to Texas to go to the Big 12 Championship game Texas vs Nebraska. What a great time spending the weekend with him and Barb and my wife. Lots of stories told and I know both our wives really did not believe half the stuff we were telling. I guess you had to have been there in 1969-70 to see it to believe it. I sometimes don't believe some of the stories myself.
Hope there is some interest for just a Prep School reunion next year. Maybe in the summer.

The reunion was terrific. I want to thank Doc for all the hard work. I don't know where I was when the photos were taken, but I was there - somewhere.

For Mike Cutbirth - The last time I saw Ron Watson was probably 1980 while transiting Kadena AB. Ron was stationed there at the time. He was suffering with the progression of sickle-cell anemia. I believe he told me he was being medically separated. He died of this a few years later. If you recall, Ron was diagnosed with this disease when he was a second or third degree (I think) because he couldn't run track anymore, and he took up martial arts. He was extremely good at it. Ron was a friend from the Prep School and classes at the Zoo. We spent several hours at the Officers' Club at Kadena AB. Later he shared pictures of his son with me. He was divorced at this time. Ron was a good and kind man. I still think of him often and our deep discussions on race and his great sense of humor. Hope this helps Mike. Take care.

I am in for some type of reunion. If not in Colorado Springs, let's really try to do something. Might not be able to make a 7 day cruise but surely we can all meet somewhere for a LONG weekend.

Talking about a SMALL world.  In my life after AFA, I spent 8 years coaching high school football in Texas.  Stop coaching in 1986.  During that time 3 of my players went to the Prep school but only one finished the Academy.  To my suprise he contacted me recently and he is the acting Vice Commendant of Cadets at the Academy this summer.  So if we want to go for a quick 40th Prep reunion he can get us some VIP treatment.

Anyone Going to USAFA-OU Game in Norman?

Will any of you be at the USAFA-Oklahoma game this weekend? If so, I would be happy to join you for an adult beverage before or immediately after the game.

This is a tough game for me since I graduated from OU and have season tickets but I have always cheered for the Falcons as well. I guess I will be cheering at every touchdown, no matter which team scores.

During the game I will be sitting in Sec 3, Row 50, seats 23/24 in case you are wondering around and want to say hi.

We Have A Hall of Fame?

Just catching up on some reading in the AOG quarterly magazine and saw a short article on the Prep School Hall of Fame. I did not realize that we had one. It never came up during the tour we all had at the reunion in 2009.

Evidently it was established in 2002 and currently has 22 members. According to the article, all Prep School graduates share in the nomination and selection process. (I must have missed out on those emails.) The members of the Prep School Hall of Fame can be found at this link:

http://www.usafa.edu/superintendent/pl/HallofFame/HallofFame.cfm  None of our class is a member yet. The only person I knew was Frank Klotz, who was a year ahead of us and roomed next door to me in 4th Squadron during my doolie year. Great guy by the way.

At any rate, the deadline for current nominations is 2/15/2011. You can submit a nomination by going to the following link:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/35CXZJ7  If you have questions, you can contact Lt. Col. Eric Rokke (Vice-Commander of the Prep School) via email at eric.rokke@usafa.edu or by calling (719) 222-9332 (DSN 333).

Consider making a nomination of someone who you think is deserving, but do it quickly.

Bill
