JUST A NOTE TO THANK EVERYONE AGAIN FOR THE HOSPITALITY, GREAT FOOD AND FRIENDSHIP! IT BROUGHT BACK SO MANY MEMORIES THAT IT DIDN'T SEEM LIKE 45 YRS. AGO THAT WE WERE ALL IN HIGH SCHOOL. IT WAS SO GOOD TO SEE SOME THAT I HAD NOT SEEN IN YEARS!! THANKS AGAIN!!

I so very much enjoyed seeing everyone and going over old times ~ a real "BLAST TO THE PAST"! It was certainly worth the trip down. Thanks to you all who helped make the reunion a huge success. I'm already looking forward to the
50th and hoping we can all keep in touch.

Dear Carol,
Thank you again for keeping up the web site. After corresponding with a couple of people there, and with the warm reception I received, this reunion was a total joy for me. The reunions of the class I actually graduated with (about 300) have not been nearly as much fun. I feel as if I could move back to Columbia tomorrow and be right at home.
I'm already looking forward to the next reunion and would like very much to help out.

Dear Sybil and Tommy,
Thank you for your open homes and hospitality. Sybil, I love your front porch and look forward to rocking there again.

Dear ALL who cooked and did so many other things,
Thank you.
Best wishes to all of you and to all your families.

Hello Everyone!

What a wonderful weekend we had! My personal Goal for the Reunion was to make it a true "Homecoming" for all of you. So many of us don't still have family or the homes we grew up in there, but Columbia will always be HOME. I think that each and every person that attended made it the success it was. Thank you all for coming and participating.

I would love to see us continue to find opportunities to get together even before the big 50th. Time is so precious and old friends are like gold. I have an idea for something to do next year if anyone is interested. If you would like to pursue something, just let me know and I would consider it an honor to work on it.

Hope that everyone who traveled had safe trips back home. Please keep in touch.

See you next time!

Linda

Hi everyone,

What a wonderful blessing to get together with classmates from the 60's & have so much fun. This was by far the
best yet. It was such a success because of everyone making an effort to get involved & taking the time to
come (especially long distance travelers).

Special thanks to:
CAROL- all the planning & organizing
TOMMY MC- entertaining the group on Friday night,
SYBIL- opening her "old home place" for Saturday brunch/night & being the perfect host.
BILLY- for the outstanding dinner
WAYNE- photographer
CAROL D.- African slide show
FRANKIE- golf event
SERVERS/PREPARERS/BEHIND THE SCENES/ETC.

Let's keep our profiles up to date so we can see what's going on in our lives & try to find our missing classmates.

Keep in touch,
Martha (Hartfield)Powell
P.S. Linda, I would love to help you plan something for next year, I love having fun.

Hi Y'all,
I've been busy off and on editing and getting the photos ready to post. I'm not sure if I can post them all on this website so if anyone knows where I can post about 3 or 4 gigabytes let me know.
Try to get in touch with the people who didn't attend and see if they will at least sign up here and contribute something!

Greetings to all,
If you'll go to my profile by clicking on my name and check the box at the bottom of the page that says "Subscribe" you'll be automatically notified by E-Mail when I update the photographs. Additionally you can go to "Profile Subscriptions" and check everyone you'd like to keep up with and you'll be notified whenever any of the profiles under the names checked are updated. I'm doing updates in baby steps so bear with me. Carol Durham said it would be at least January before she compiled everything and had the presentation DVD's ready. Let me know if I get anything wrong or inappropriate. So far I'm posting the photos unedited and as taken. Some of them will be improved in the near future. Best wishes to all for good health and prosperity.

I know it's a bit late for the Orionids meteor shower announcement and this year as it's expected to begin its peak in about 3-1/2 hours. The next one is the Leonids November 17 & 18. This year's Leonids is supposed to be the best in the past 10 years. You can read about it here:

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/081204-leonids-meteor-shower-2009.html

I remember the 2001 Leonids with over 10 per minute and that was spectacular. I'm taking the cameras out and taking a series of 15 second exposures all night long. A meteor, along with a lightning bolt are two things I've been trying to photograph for years without success so another failure wouldn't disappoint me although I grow a bit "long in the tooth" and time is a more precious commodity than in years past. Hope springs... Yada, yada, yada
I haven't proof-read this so forgive the typos and expression errors.

Hmmmmm,
Still nothing new in the forum.
Well, I'm never at a loss for words so here's an announcement concerning another upcoming celestial event:
the Geminids meteor shower peaks this year on December... Here's the article posted from November 30, 2009 at www.spaceweather.com (A totally safe site):

GEMINID METEOR FORECAST: Mark your calendar. The Geminid meteor shower peaks on Dec. 13th and 14th when Earth passes through a stream of debris from extinct comet 3200 Phaethon. The Geminids have been intensifying in recent years, and 2009 could be the best year yet. Forecasters expect 140+ meteors per hour under the dark skies of a new Moon. [sky map]

140 meteors per hour works out to a little over 2 per minute so it should be spectacular!
Personally, I take a comfortable chair and an old comforter in case I want to lay on the ground, a neck pillow, beverage, binoculars (Just in case it gets intense so I can see some closer up), a flashlight (red lens keeps my pupils open and preserves night vision), a voice or tape recorder (optional of course), and of course camera(s) and tripod(s).
Find as dark a place as you can free from city street lights, etc. and even put a fence or shrubs between you and whatever lights you can't get away from... The darker it is the more you'll see!
this year is blessed with a new or dark moon so viewing should be excellent.
If the clouds roll in all bets are off though. That's what usually happens to me but this year I'm willing to travel a substantial distance to get a chance to see this one.
Interested or not, one good shower and you'll be hooked forever.
Wayne

ah, yes. The best time to view, according to usually accurate sources is ideal this year as it falls between 10 PM Sunday night and 2 AM Monday morning. If you're out those same hours Saturday or Tuesday look up as there will be fewer numbers but possibly more spectacular larger fireballs.
The geminids are notorious for not leaving long trails like the Perseids or Leonids but just as pretty and awe-inspiring.
Now I'll turn it over to Tommy: Tommy?

I've found quite a few classmates at www.classmates.com and invited them to come and join here. If any of you get a chance go there and encourage them as well please. I don't really recall who I've seen there and invited but if they get more invites they may be tempted to come over to the GOOD site. I joined there but don't recommend it as it's pretty pricey, loaded with pop-ups, and difficult to navigate. There's a free sign-up but they send a lot of spam and prompts for information. Some of it's pretty personal and a lot of it looks like psychological profiling (That's the paranoia talking).
I just got through inviting Rebecca (Becky Cook) Ulmer to join here and noticed she lives in Columbia. I've also invited James Davis and ran across Judy Morgan as well.
Classmates.com is a well-advertised web site and seems to have attracted quite a few classmates looking to re-connect. Go there, look around, and let them know about our vastly superior class of '64 site here and remind them that it's free and simple to join.
Give me a little support here, folks!

Wayne Elkins

Well, apparently not! (If you read the last message posted here)

So I'll continue posting here. All I need is a soapbox to elevate me so my voice carries and something to say...

Today I have a sad message; my mother, Nell Elkins passed into her glorious reward in Heaven. Today she's rejoicing in the bosom of God, the company of Jesus Christ, and the arms of family and friends who have gone there before. She died quietly in her sleep about 9:10 Friday evening August 2, 2013. She and I were alone in her hospital room at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg where she'd been just a few hours past 2 weeks following surgery to remove about 12 inches of obstructed small intestine. She spent about 10 days in ICCU before getting into a room where family took turns in vigil to see she remained as comfortable as possible.

If you don't know about Mother's life the past few years then allow me to bring you "Up to speed". She was a tireless worker around her yard and home, her church attending mission meetings and cooking, caring for shut-ins, delivering books to shut-ins, and generally doing good works selflessly forever.

I'd love to say she was that active up until this final set-back but I noticed her slowing down the past couple of years finally relenting to letting someone else mow her large lawn last season and this year. She did her own housework in her large-ish house until the end and drove herself and friends to church, shopping, doctors' appointments, etc, finally leaving the trips to Hattiesburg to my daughter, Alicia, and me. She attended First Baptist Church regularly on Sundays, Wednesdays, and revivals (unless it was going to be "One of those singing meetings". She was, herself, tone-deaf and there was something about music that seemed to annoy her immensely.

She volunteered at our local food pantry and tapered off the physical labors the past year or so and worked tirelessly with our local hospital as outreach vice-president soliciting new members, scheduling workers, promoting events, and turning down numerous offers of presidency, which would have been considerably less work. She wanted to be in the position that best suited the organization and was that until her retirement this year past. I visited her and she'd always make me be refilled with love of God, community, and fellow humanity. If she ever spoke ill of anyone it was either passed well-deserved or in jest. She loved a good joke, whether oral or physical and was quick with a smile which faded quickly this past year or two - It was almost as if smiles were almost uncomfortable for her and she had become obsessive over her wrinkles lately. She spoke of them seriously once a few weeks ago and, although she went no further, they reminded her of someone who caused her unpleasant memories. All I could think of to say was her life was written in those wrinkles - more smile than frown and deeply etched as she'd lost weight over the past couple of years; she had been just a few pounds over ideal most of her life and would, at times, obsess over that until she lost down to and past what was comfortable and to underweight the past year or so but she stayed reasonably healthy.

I've been interrupted in this writing on my smartphone (HA!) and I'll probably come back here for a re-write shortly because time has suddenly become more important than my inane ramblings over a person who'll never be recognized past her friends and family but she had immeasurable impact on that group of people.

Mother, rest in peace - You've certainly earned it.

Wayne,

I have been involved in family visits for the past 3 weeks and have just read your message.  Your mother was indeed a great friend to my mother and was so faithful to visit her in the hospital long term care area.  Many of their friends had passed on and Mother didn't have many visitors during those last years, but I could always count on seeing your mother's smiling face as a volunteer and she always stopped by when I was home visiting. She truly had a giving spirit and showed the love of Christ in her actions.  I would like to express my sympathy to you and your family in your loss.

Carol

Thank you Carol for the kind words and the sentiments; I've found so many people with each having a different experience with Mother and all of them passionate with memories of a gentle, caring, genuine, and touching message. We were speaking in the hospital a few days before she passed and she expressed true doubts about her salvation; the complete story is much longer than I'm unprepared to post here but I do have it written on another computer and I'll share it with you later, if you'd care to read it but I couldn't keep the tears out of my voice when I reassured her that her soul was indeed safe with my reasoning being that she LIVED her Christianity day-by-day. I'm sure she will be missed by many people but she'd shared herself with humanity hour by hou every day; she wasn't tired of serving but she was, as she put it, "Just tired." I, of course, miss her daily and my missing is just beginning. Thank you again for your remembrances and your sympathy. I hope God continues to richly bless you and all you love.

Love and hugs,
Wayne

Hi Wayne & Carol,

I do read these messages when they come through.  I just got the messages this morning.

I'm really sorry to hear about your Mom, Wayne.  Mine has been gone for 15 years and I still

miss her.  She'll always be with you though - Mom's are like that.

I'm excited about the next reunion as I so enjoyed the last one.  I loved being in the old house

and being allowed to "mingle".  I wouldn't mind doing that again and maybe spreading it to

the outdoors and having it all afternoon.  There were people I didn't get a chance to talk to.

I've had friends who have had theirs in restaurants and they didn't like that - way too noisy and

not enough time.

I went to TN to visit my sister and daughter who has a cabin in Hohenwald.  Carol Durham

lives just 10 miles away and I got to visit with her.  It was great!  Her home is really neat and tucked

into the woods.  We visited the Elephant Santuary Museum where Carol works and got the "grand

tour".  It's a wonderful place and I know why Carol loves it so.  She's going to keep in touch with

my daughter, Aimee.  It really is a small world.

You all take care.  It's back to school for me next week.  Keep in touch.

Love Ya,

Brenda Kay

Wayne,

I remember your mom as a very sweet lady.  I know that Aunt Allene and my mother were very fond of her.

I know you were a blessing to her.  She loved you very much.

Thank you all for all the hard work you put into the 55th reunion.  I can't begin to tell you

how much fun I had seeing everyone.  It was even nice back at the hotel chatting with friends

after the festivities.   After  sharing with my friends here in Virginia,  I realize that our class is so very unique.

No one does a reunion like the class of 64!

Also,  thank you to Wayne Elkins for always providing such great photos.  And,  Bobby Davis,

I hope you write another poem to share next time. And, a big thank you to Carol Hough who works

so hard to keep the website up and being persistent in pulling these reunions off.  We wouldn't

have them if it weren't for you!

I feel priviliged to be a part of this wonderful group of people.  Hope to see you in 5 years!!!

Carol Hough Linger always “lights our fire” to gather for

these wonderful reunions. I am so glad i am back in the

Columbia area to be able to have “hands on” with everyone

else who helped and gave suggestions as did our lunch

group. I so totally agree with Kay that we have a special

class connection which becomes very obviously different

especially when you have lived away from the area.

Thank you all for caring. Hugs
