Remembering Shirley
When I moved to College Park, Maryland, in the 70’s, Shirley and her two children where my first guests for dinner. Harrison had the good sense to not come. My spaghetti was not very good, but they were polite.
I moved to Chicago and lost contact with her, but we have family connections so I always knew about major events in her life. I knew when her son was killed. Her son, Brian Gibson, was a DC police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1997. Years later I was watching national news and a story was presented about Shirley and her work on behalf of the DC Police Dept. She had opened her home to DC police officers and prepared an annual holiday meal for officers for years. She was a strong supporter and advocate for police issues. Watching that story I felt so proud of her. She had taken tragedy in her life and used it to do something positive. Google her for more info about her work.
We remember her as friendly, outgoing and a dedicated member of our class. When she was able, she would show up. I last saw her at her mother’s funeral. She was sad, of course, and did not look well, but she still had that thing that made her uniquely Shirley.
I am proud of so many of my classmates and felt the need to highlight Shirley.
I don't post often, so forgive any errors.
Thanks for listening and y’all take care.
