Dave Orloff

Profile Updated: August 24, 2016
Residing In: Pflugerville, TX USA
Spouse/Partner: Tammy
Occupation: Photogrammetrist
Children: Adam, Alex. Stepsons, actually, couldn't see my genes contributing to mankind's future, so I got my More…kids pre-assembled at ages four and six. Couldn't love 'em more, they have been the most joy and exasperation in my adult life!
Class Year: 1978
School Story:

Not much to tell, I was an enormous geek, very awkward socially, proud member of the Tx 91st AFJROTC. Mediocre student, think I finished in the middle of the class.

What have you always wanted to do that you haven't done yet?

Travel Europe, get pilot's license, hit the Lotto and build a vast compound near Terlingua.

Still have family in the Judson area?

Nope, we moved the folks to San Marcos before they passed.

What did you do after high school?

Spent a year as a sporting goods salesman for Woolco, decided college wasn't such a bad idea! Attended SWTSU for four and a half years, got a degree in Geography with a specialization in Cartography, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Delivered pizzas, prep cooked at a vegetarian restaurant, ran rides at Aquarena Springs, worked convenience stores, did a summer as an assistant aircraft mechanic, taught Assertiveness Training (seriously?!), worked as a Lab Assistant in the Cartography lab, was a Cartographer for the Edwards Aquifer Research and Data Center, and a Draftsman for the Grounds Maintenance Department, but finished up with only a 900 dollar student loan debt.

How many grandchildren?

3

What do you do in your spare time?

Ride an old BMW R100S, still build model airplanes ( a few of which are in collections as far away as Tokyo and a couple of US museums) read voraciously, agitate politically (heartless Libertarian), used to keep bees, may do it again sometime, camp, hunt wild turkeys, target shoot pistol and rifle. Hang around airports and museums working on old airplanes whenever possible. Got a nice bicycle I ride 'round Pflugerville, need to do more of that.

Jobs:

Since college, I've been an instrument man on a survey crew, cab driver, cartographer, library assistant, CAD draftsman, and civil engineering technician, the last four jobs all for the City of San Marcos. Worked as a civil engineering tech for HTB Inc, Tulsa Ok, then as a map editor for Aerial Data Service, also in Tulsa. Trained as a photogrammetric plotter operator, moved to Pflugerville when we opened the Austin branch of ADS in '98. Still doing photogrammetry, now doing the same job for TxDOT.

High points of your life since high school:

Third marriage is the one that took, met Tammy in '94, married her in '96, still getting along. Was happy to finally get into aerial mapping after years of putting up with engineers. Seeing the boys graduate, Adam become a dad, Alex join the Army.

Anything you know now that you wish you knew then?

Don't marry alcoholic pillheads, there's no fixin' them (first wife). Don't marry after a long distance courtship especially if it means moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma! (second wife)

Though I wouldn't have ended up working for ADS and married to Tammy if I had known the second, so what can I say?

What would we be surprised to know about you?

I guess that I turned out okay, after all!

What kind of vehicle did you drive? Any special stories concerning that car/truck/van, etc.?

A variety of interesting cars and motorcycles, a '58 Willys 4WD wagon for a while, a '66 Barracuda, various old Mopars. Learned to ride on Mikey's '63 Honda 305, rode a 750 Triumph Bonneville for a bit, then nothing but airhead Bims since. Not much of a distance rider unlike my brother, but I've ridden 'cycles in cold and hot, rain, snow, sleet and hail. Just a fun way to knock around...

Who was your favorite band?

Hard to say, Pink Floyd? Neil Young, too many choices

What was the best concert you ever attended?

Neil Young and Crazy Horse

What were your favorite movies or TV shows?

Movies: the Alien series, Blade Runner, Brother Where Art Thou? Hunt for Red October, Shakes the Clown, Serenity, Outlaw Josie Wales, the new Star Trek to name a few

TV: X-files, Fringe, Firefly, the Band of Brothers miniseries, any geeky science/movie stuff on TLC, History or Discover, the Unusuals, Chuck

Have you ever traveled to any exotic locales?

Tramped around the ruins at Uxmal, Chichen Itza, and Tulum.
Fell in love with the Big Bend region, but don't spend near enough time getting out there.

Have any pet peeves about life/people you'd like to discuss?

Can't stand ignorant people.

Ever met any famous or notable people?

Most of the cast of the original Star Trek, Kinky Friedman, Ron White, Bill Clinton, Al Gore. And yes, in that order of importance.
Oh, yeah the (almost, locally) famous members of the KLBJ FM morning show, Dale, Bob, Charlie and Angela! I gotta get a life...
