I joined the U.S. Air Force a few months after graduating from high school and got my wish, to see other parts of the world. My first assignment after basic training at Lackland AFB, S.A.,TX was Chanute AFB, Rantoul, Il. From there I went to Osan Air Base, South Korea, for six months and then to Tachikawa Air Base, Japan, for one year. I returned to the states for my next assignment at Suffolk County AFB, Long Island, NY. I was there three months before I volunteered for temporary duty of three months at Thule Air Base, Greenland. I returned to Suffolk to finish my four year tour in July, 1963. During my tour of duty I was assigned to work as a reporter on each of the base newspapers, from news writer to columnist (Thule Times) to sports writer (Kanto Plainsman-Tachikawa). When I got out of the service I continued my career as a news writer with the Caller Times and KRIS TV for 15 years. Also worked as an investigator for the C.C. Human Relations Commission, the State Commission on Judicial Conduct, Child Protective Services and for several local law firms. I am now retired.
While stationed in Japan I married Kimiko Shimamura, the interpreter and translator for the Office of Information at Tachikawa Air Base. I lost her to cancer on Jan. 1, 1995 after 32 years of marriage. My four children have scattered to the wind, three in Texas and one in Pennsylvania. My oldest, Naomi, has made me a grandpa six times and she and her family live in Spring where she home schools her little tribe. My second oldest Michelle is a pediatric anesthesiologist at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. Son Patrick is an attorney in Austin where he lives with his wife and my seventh grandchild. My youngest, Bianca, works for an oil company in Pittsburgh where she lives with her husband.
