Graduated from NCHS June 3, 1968 and enter the United States Coast Guard June 10, 1968. After 17 weeks of basic training I reported Electronics Tech School, Governors Island NY. After graduation form school was assigned as the senior tech on Iwo Jima, VI for a little over 12 months. Iwo Jima was an isolated LORAN "A" and LORAN "C" station 660- miles se of Japan.
After the tour over seas, Marcia and I were married on September 6, 1970. We finished our 4 year obligation to Uncle Sam June 1972.
I started my career with the Covington Fire Department on June 16, 1972 as a fire fighter. Moving through the ranks , I served 19 years as fire marshal and was appointed as Fire Chief on January 1999. Retired December 31, 2011 after 39 years, 6 months and 13 days of service to the City of Covington.
Marcia and I are the proud parents of two wonderful young men. Michael, the oldest, was the validictorian of Newton County High School Class of 1990 and was a presidential scholar at Georgia Tech where he graduated with a 3.9 GPA with a degree in compurter engineering and a masters in electrical engineering from Stanford. He currently is a senior engineer with IBM designing computer chips. Michael married Stephanie Smith ( daughter of Patsy Dalton Smith) and they reside in Austin Texas with their son Andrew ( 7yrs) .
Thomas, the youngest, was a honor graduate of Newton County High School in 1994. He graduated with High Honors from the University of Georgia, Warnell School of Forest Resources and obtained his masters from Clemson in wild life biology. Thomas is a wildlife biologist with the Georgia Depoartment of Natural Resources, Nongame, endangered species division.
Thomas has two daughters, Emma 6 yrs, and Sarah 4 months and they reside in Covington.
Marcia worked for Main Street Bank for over twenty years , retired in 2005 to keep care of our granddaughters.
