Since leaving the classroom landed my bucket job with Great Lakes Airlines at Pueblo 6 years ago. We do everything but fly the aircraft as we feed Denver with passengers in short 2 to 4 hour shifts. Get to play with little Beech 1900's and pilots who look like they just left junior high. My co-worker graduated from McHenry in 60 and his father also worked for United while driving DC-8's ! Handle charters for Allegiant, Sun Country, and Republic and diversions and emergency landings for United, Southwest, Frontier, Jet Blue and American. All kinds of weather, de-icing at minus 15, or today at 98 on the ramp. Denver's DIA has horrible weather at times so we get to tell you that you you won't make your flight to Cabo today..maybe tomorrow if I can find you a seat. Oh what fun it is for $10 an hour!

I really enjoy coming back to Crystal Lake to see what has changed and what hasn't, including all of you. So you may see me driving up and down Dole, Pomeroy, Lincoln Parkway and Woodstock and Main on Saturday as I love the old houses. Glad we are gathering at the Main Beach, it will bring back so many memories...........Listen to the lyrics of Springsteen's " Girls In Their Summer Clothes" Is this not Crystal Lake? !!

No grandchildren yet....just grand-dogs!

School Story

I may have shared this story before, it's the memory thing you know. I had to call George Chandler to see if I still have it right and he confirmed it so here goes......
It may have been the summer after 8th grade or maybe our freshman year. Steve Kaye, George and I were were walking down Dole towards the Main Beach. We were dressed in swimsuits and had towels. We looked like we were going for a swim. Before we got to Virginia, a car approached us going the opposite way, slowed down, and a man asked for directions to the Main Beach. Steve being as polite as ever walked across the street and began to give the most detailed directions on how to get to....... the pond at Vet's Acres! Steve was sooo matter of fact and didn't miss a beat. George and I looked at each other and it took everything we had not to burst out laughing. Yes sir says Steve just follow what I said and you'll be at the Lake in no time. The man was very thankful and continued on towards Crystal Lake Ave. I thought we were going to wet our pants laughing so hard. Then it was... holy shit what if he comes back after learning that the pond was not the Lake! Our pace was greatly increased until we reached the safety of the beach!
George,yes, we will have coffee!

Agreed Ron!The first thing that came to mind with this sad news was how great a smile Jane had. And a laugh to go with it!  Great memories of Jane walking with us to Central JH every morning.

We were pretty lucky to have the outstanding teachers as we did at CLCHS.

Mr. Quick included.

Mr. Quick was responsible for my sister Trish gaining admission to Colorado State University/ Ft Collins in 1970. She wanted to major in Interior Design. CSU required an art portfolio for the School of Art,  which she did not have.  Although she is quite talented she had never even had an art class at CLCHS ! Mr. Quick spent hours with Trish developing her portfolio consisting of water colors, oils, sculpture and fabric....after school on his own time ! Trish was admitted ! This led to her moving back to Colorado, meeting her future husband and an amazing career with the Banner Health System.

Mr. Quick was close to George Chandler and his pathway into the world of art.

As a teacher most of us want to know that we made a difference in the lives of our students.

I also am saddened by Joe's passing. Spent many hours with him on the football field and at at wrestling practice. Always the joker, I had to go back and look at what he wrote in my 66- 67 Tiger Tales on the Varsity football page......"Even though I didn't play much we had fun listening to Charlie's (Fatchett) jokes even when they were not funny!."  And he signed it " Joe A 1 Mafia". He did well for someone who did not grow up with the American sports scene.

My heartfelt condolences go out to John and Maria.

I was lucky enough to attend Coach Mack's service last Saturday in CL. Each of his sons spoke well of their father and what it was like to grow up in a household with such an intense Coach. There were many stories to be told and much laughter. There was well over one hundred in attendance with many who played for him.

My memories of him include that at the end of our junior year several of us went to him as our Assistant Principal and practcally begged him to be our Coach for the fall of 67 football season. His reputation followed him from his success at Cary-Grove. To our disapointment he explained that as an Administrator he could not coach.......

During the week of Homecoming 67 Coach Mack put out a request to memebers of the Varsity Club to help collect firewood around town for the Bonfire .He pulled several of us out of study hall and lunch to pick up donations of all kinds of wood. Once that task was done he said lets all go to his house for lunch! Mrs Mack had prepared sandwiches and pumpkin bread. i was really touched with the hospitality of the Mack's and never having had pumpkin bread I had to have the recipe! Still have it today on a 3x5 card as it became a favorite in our house. Brought it with me Saturday. Shared it with Mrs Mack.

My only regret...never having had the opportunity to play for him.  Listening to all the the stories told of him was inspirational. My own coaching experiece may have been different had I had that opportunity. RIP Bill Mack.

Can't forget his Tiger team did beat BARRINGTON in 1974    24-20  !

I sat behind George in every class when we were seated alphabetically. I can still remember the day and the study hall where his seat was empty, forever. We did not have crises teams then. We all could have used one.
