I met Richard in 8th grade. We rode the bus together. He was a cool guy, only thing he liked the same girl I did, Janis Dannelly.  I'm dating Janis now, the love of my life!  One day Richard got on the bus all frustrated. I ask what was going on. He said he was accused of skipping class and almost got a detention. What really happened was that I had skipped study hall and got caught. Richard & I looked alike back then so I gave his name.  Worked for me! Richard always had a smile and was really cool. Rest in peace my friend.

Richard passed on August 17, 2011 in Dallas, and was a long-time resident of Lakewood environs. He was born July 20th, 1948, a week before my own birthday. And we were friends. We'd sometimes celebrate together. And there were the usual model cars, bike adventures and fireworks on the Fourth. We'd all throw our paper routes on selected Saturdays from the back of a '57 Desoto convertible that belonged to Jack  Armstrong, HHS '65. Our families lived a few houses down from one another in Merriman Park. Mike Lynch and Pat Kimble lived there too. My fondest grownup memories with Richard were our recurrimg ping pong & beer nights. Evenly matched, we'd slug it out into the night, with an occasional break where Richard's wife would come out and routinely whip either one of us with a paddle in one hand and a beer in the other. I'm glad we found a way to share friendship in his last years. A long struggle with kidney disease was tough on him. I would round him up now and then and we'd have breakfast and a chat.
