Graduated from Augustana College in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in geology. Went to the Univ. of CA, Berkeley from 1978-1980, receiving a Masters of Science degree in geology. I moved to Denver after graduating from UC Berkeley and have lived here ever since. I began my career as a geologist in the oil business in Denver from 1981-1988 until I got laid off due to the decline in the oil market. In 1989, I started working in a variety of environmental programs with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. From 1998 until mid-2005, I managed the states oversight of the former Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant. Cleanup of this plutonium contaminated site was completed ion 2005 at a cost of $6.5 billion. From 2005 to 2014 I was director of the Colorado Water Quality Control Division, which consisted of a staff of approximate 190 and managed the state's Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act programs. It was an extremely political job and I often found myself in the midst of controversy with the press and elected officials, either being accused in being too heavily handed in addressing environmental issues, or not being proactive enough, and often on the same day. It was a very interesting job, but after 9 years, I decided to hang it up in May 2014 and retired as a full-time state employee. Since retiring as the Water Director, I have been doing some part-time work for the department as well as some environmental consulting on a Boeing-owned site undergoing cleanup in southern California.
My wife Gloria and I have been married since 1987. We are fitness enthusiasts, trying to hold off the inevitable decay of the human body. Gloria and I have become avid trail runners, a sport that has become popular in the West. We have done a large number of runs above timberline in Colorado, including runs up a number of 14,000 peaks, such as Pikes Peak and Longs Peak. We've also run to the bottom and back up to the rim of the Grand Canyon, and run in a number of other national parks, such as Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and of course Rocky Mountain.
