Doris Scott & Erika Bailey - Memorial Fund
On behalf of the Scott and Bailey families, a memorial fund has been established in their names to assist these families with purchasing headstones for Doris and Erika’s graves.

Imagine going to visit the grave of a family member or friend, but having to guess where the grave is because there is no marker or headstone. This is what the family and friends of Doris and Erika have been doing for over 3 years.

Over the last three years it has been heartbreaking to visit the cemetery time after time and watch the mound of dirt gradually settle into the earth, watch the grass grow back ever so slowly and knowing with each passing day the spot that marked where your loved one is laid to rest is quickly disappearing back into normalcy, until soon there is no trace that someone is even buried beneath the soil.

Doris (Clark) Scott was a personal friend of mine. Doris and I met the spring before we started kindergarten in 1970, I was 4 she was 5. Our friendship remained strong through grade school, high school, marriage, children, and into our 40’s. How many people can say they have had the same friend for 35 years? Not many that I know.

Sadly, Doris’ life ended shortly before her 41st birthday, leaving behind a husband, three children and two grandchildren.

Just months following Doris’ death, Doris’s niece, Erika’s husband (Fred) passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Then only two months later Erika herself passed away just as suddenly and unexpectedly as her husband, leaving behind their three minor children. Erika was laid to rest at the foot of Doris’ grave.

Doris’ husband Tim died one year later, leaving their three children parentless as well.

Imagine the shock and trauma these deaths, all occurring so close together, left this family.

The children of Doris and Erika are doing well, as well as can be expected considering the circumstances. However the families were not able to purchase headstones for Doris and Erika. In fact, Erika’s family is still paying for her funeral expenses.

Doris was my dearest friend for many, many years and it pains me to visit her grave and see only dirt and bare patches of grass. For two years I’ve wanted to do something about it and now I finally am.

Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, OH is where Doris and Erika are buried. Woodland has offered a generous discount to purchase headstones for both Doris and Erika.

If you feel it in your heart to contribute, a memorial fund has been set up at 5th/3rd Bank.
