Days Gone by
By Fred Parker
Duck tail dos and Levi jeans
Soda fountains and coke machines,
Saddle oxfords and bobby sox,
Rock and Roll records on the old juke box;
Pony tails and a poodle skirt,
A James Dean jacket and a white t-shirt
Drive-in movies on Saturday night,
A cute little girl made you feel alright;
Elvis and Buddy and Fats and Rick’
Moved you close to that cute little chick.
After the movie you were set to cruse,
To rock & roll heaven and rhythm& blues;
Carhops busy on their roller skates,
Window hung trays and paper plates,
A twelve cent burger and a chocolate shake,
An eight ounce coke and a Ho Ho cake,
But all too soon it was time to leave,
Cause your date is tugging on your jacket sleeve,
You told her papa she’d be home by ten,
You messed up once don’t do it again,
As you wait tongue-tied for a kiss good night.
Her father turns on the front porch light;
Before you can count from one to four,
He's standing there glaring through the open door.
Come Monday morning you’re back in school,
Where they teach you Civics and the Golden Rule,
And at the start of a brand new day
We bow our heads as our teachers pray.
It's all gone now and that's the truth,
For it faded away with our long lost youth.
