- The XXII Winter Olympics take place in Sochi, Russia.
- General Motors recalls 780,000 vehicles due to faulty ignition switches.
- Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Bejing, disappears from radar in airspace over the Gulf of Thailand.
- President Barack Obama announces that 9,800 troops will remain in Afganistan after the withdrawal of most troops at the end of 2014.
- The CDC issues its initial announcement on an Ebola outbreak in Guinea.
- The US Senate confirms Robert McDonald as the new Veterans Affairs secretary.
- The US Supreme Court refuses to hear appeals from five states – Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin – seeking to keep their same-sex marriage bans in place.
- Thomas Eric Duncan dies of Ebola in Dallas, Texas, the first person to die of the disease in the United States.
- Nina Pham, a Dallas nurse who treated Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan, is diagnosed with the disease. She is the first person to contract the disease in the United States. After being treated at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland, Pham is cured of the disease and released on October 24.

Technology 2014
- Ebola-Dialysis Machine: The Ebola outbreak of 2014 took a toll in West and Central Africa. If there's one thing the Ebola virus is known for, its the startling rate at which it can take over a person's immune system. As such, devices like the Hemopurifier, which filters blood to remove the Ebola virus, are a very welcome invention.
- Hendo Hoverboard: Invented by the California-based tech firm Hendo, this prototype was made possible thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that successfully raised $450,000 dollars towards its development.
- Wireless Electricity: WiTricity, the Watertown, Massachussets-based wireless developer created a central charging base that can power objects up to 2.4 meters (8 feet) away.
