Ignorant people can't tell the difference. Racism at it's truest.

I was a branch manager for a bank at the time and one of my tellers was from india. She was a US citizen (had been for over 35 years) and moved to Baltimore for New York. A guy asked her where she was from and she said New York. He so NO where are you from.. she said a little slower...NEW YORK. He said no where were you before you were here.. and she said Wal-Mart.. I just about died of laughter. I should have given her a raise.

When I was still dating my husband, he spent a summer living in McAllen TX and working at the Delco plant in Reynosa Mexico. I went down there to see him for a few weeks and it turned out some of those Mexican office tarts were trying to get my husband to marry them. That pissed me off a bit. Other than that, I have no prejudice towards Mexico and it's people.

I live in the DC area and it was really scary here on 9/11. I was at work when it happened and they closed the office. People had relatives and friends who worked at the Pentagon. People who ended up being lost. It took me 5 hours just to get home. People really panicked. At that time, my office was sandwiched in between two top secret CIA buildings and a week later some idiot phoned in a bomb threat from our building. All of a sudden armed milita in gas masks burst into the office, frisked all of us and made us walk out with our arms up like we were criminals. Crazy.

I was suppose to be on a plane 9/12/01...needless to say the flight was canceled. My flight was changed to 9/22/01. The airport was easy to go through w/the exception of my hubby not being able to walk us to the plane...on the way back 11/6/01 the airport was filled w/national guards. I thought to myself...did it take us 3 weeks really to think of putting in the national guard? Wow, no wonder we were attacked.

When we first moved to Ft. Meade (which is an Army Post) it was an unsecured post. It is the home of the NSA (National Security Agency) and anyone and their brother could drive right past it. They secured the post on August 24, 2001. We always lived on Air Force Bases. At Whiteman AFB, if you came to visit me, I would have to go to the gate and bring you to my house. They would finger print you, take your picture and search your car before you drove on to the base. ARMY is a little different.

Shannon, silly question for you... Do you watch Army Wives? I love that show!

April Passen (Ochman)

My brother was in the Navy & recently retired after 22 years in. I went to visit him in Norfolk & all I can say was it was very intimidating. I loved my visit, but wow... I totally seen a world I was not familiar with.

So when they secured the base on Aug 24, did you know something big was potentially up?

11/05/08 05:02 PM #635

Shannon Krych (Hofer)

yes, but officer wives and enlisted wives do not hang out together. But most is pretty close to what happens. When my husband transfered to the NSA, there was parts of his job that I couldn't know about and stuff like that.

11/05/08 05:04 PM #636

Shannon Krych (Hofer)

no, they finally decided it was a bad idea to have civilians going past NSA. ARMY is a little slow. Most other ARMY posts are open posts. Which means anyone can drive right on...

Air Force is top knotch...totally respected, then Navy the Squids 2nd to top, then Army, then Marines...this is what my brother told me...does that seem to be the consensus Shannon through Air force views as well?

11/05/08 05:06 PM #638

Tracey Ulrich (Dawson)

My brother Matt was 20 yrs in the Air Force.

Air Force have very high standards for their people. The Air Force built there own baracks, chow hall and gym on Ft. Meade because what was there is substandard for their men and women. It is not universal across all branches of the military. Most Air Force people take advantage of GI bill. My husband got his BA and MBA while in Air Force.

Look at us grilling the girl on the military. See Shannon... you said a few days ago that you think you lived a boring life...we think the grass is greener on your side!

9/11/01-
Kate's first birthday
My first day at my first teaching job in Queens. We could see the smoke and the next couple of days we could smell the dust and smoke. Eerie feeling.

Kerry lost about 5 people she grew up with. I figured that any day before 9/11 now is what I call "the good old days".
