Coach Bach,

Even before you were my coach, I knew you as my brother Don’s coach.  Lowrey was a door mat for the inter-city teams in the Twin Valley League.  Power houses the likes of Hamtramck, Highland Park, River Rouge, Willow Run, and Romulus were your competition.  In 1963 Lowrey moved to the Tri River League.  With the help of All League & All City players Co-Captain Don DeMayo & Co-Captain Ron Kubisiak, Bob Ortega, Gerry Jurzec, and juniors Frank Perry & Doug Cole, Lowrey became the power house of your new league.  You and Coach’s Bob Flee & John Bodary guided that team to Harvey H. Lowrey’s first football tile ever.  Lowrey never won another football title.  You should be proud.

My freshman year, you assigned me to the Varsity team.  I had mixed emotion, as I was sad that I wasn’t playing with my classmates & friends, but I was excited I made Varsity.  John Hull, Gene Ellefson, Tony Ortega, Ed Gabrys, and Steve Gerch anchored that 1968 Team.  I hope I played up to your expectations.

I was on the last team to wear the Polar Bear colors of Red & Gray in 1969.  Lowrey was closing as a high school.  Unfortunately for us, you had moved onto a new position at Fordson High School.  With only one class in the school, interest waned.  Coaches Flee, Gretzner, and Barnett continued your tradition of hard nose, grind it out, and never give up football.  We didn’t win a game that year, but we played with the heart & soul of that great 1963 team.

Some of the guys have talked about doing some sprints up the hill in your honor.   However, we have reconsidered, and at our ages decided a toast to you will work just fine.  Here is to you Coach.

Some classmates have fond memories of you as their chemistry teacher, but you will always be coach to my brother Don and I.

Don & Rick DeMayo
